Un petit peu plus qu’un scénario, mais bien moins qu’un roman. Deux étoiles parce que le film est parfait, mais franchement, un livre inutile au regard du script qu’il reprend plan par plan… si ma mémoire est bonne.

Un film envoutant pour un livre sans émotions. Où sont passés la magie, les plans magnifiques, le jeu subtil des acteurs et la poésie d’un rythme paisible comme une chanson plaisante.

'Youth' feels like a film script in waiting, and the cover (showing Michael Caine in what I guess was the film poster) suggests that little had to be done to translate from one medium to another. This is not to say that 'Youth' is a slight work - far from it. In his examination of life at the bitter end, Sorrentino hits the right notes more often than not, but there are times when the minimalist prose works against him more than it should. Clearly one for the bon mot, Sorrentino also has a habit of putting more wisdom into his characters' expressions than they could be expected to appreciate themselves - they sound far wiser than they are, or should be. As a consequence there is a disconnect between what you see and what you hear, and there are times when the prose strays uncomfortably towards the cliche. ( )

De personages draaien een beetje om elkaar heen, zonder veel meer dan rimpelingen te veroorzaken in het zwembad. Zo gaat het tot het einde door, bijna plotloos, langs soms komische, bijna absurde scènes.

Of de film beter is dan het boek, weet ik niet. Maar voor de helft van de prijs van het boek krijg je er in de bioscoop wel de beelden bij, en topacteurs als Michael Cain en Harvey Keitel.
