This was a solid retelling of Pride and Prejudice in a contemporary setting. I liked the changes made to the Bennet family, especially not having a Kitty character, and the issue of gentrification vs. development that centers the Liza Dorsey conflict. There were a few things that bothered me though, one being the multiple instances of short time jumps in a few scenes (e.g., the gala has one or two and the scene with Park, Liza, and Dorsey making dinner had one), and two being the numerous instances of Dorsey tenting because of how sexy Liza was - it was literally every time he saw her - too much! I would have liked a little more resolution for Gigi as well. ( ) This was recommended to me by a few people and they were right to do so. It's a smart way to cover the P&P ground while giving us a great story about a family coming into being their best selves (the Bennett siblings). The Darcy and Gigi characters have such great depth as well. The main set pieces of the originating book are given an inspired modern twist that really works and gets the feeling of those moments. It's incredibly well done and I hope the next one (there's a taster at the end of the book) manages to do the same. This was a terrific retelling of Pride & Prejudice. It's told from Liza & Dorsey's (Elizabeth & Darcy) perspecives. Liza is DJ, who wants to work making a difference. She's a social justice advocate using her DJ job to speak up for the causes she believes in. Dorset is an adopted son of the Pemberley family whose parents have passed away. There's one less sister in this story along with a brother, but the brother reminded me of Mr Bennett from the original P&P, especially at the end; so it worked for me. This story was so evocative of the original that I thought the author must have channeled Ms Austen. But while it was true to the original it was still very much present day. The characters, instead of British poor gentry and rich ton, were Blacks who were economically challenged and the Pemberly crew were 10%ers and there hanger-ons. This was overall a mediocre read for me. Liza didn't have much character. Her role as an activist is talked up but isn't really explored much, which isn't great when it's meant to be a major part of her character. Dorsey's horny and snarky, but mostly just horny. They do have some nice moments, some chemistry, but I never got invested in their relationship. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

When they go toe-to-toe, the sparks fly-but her impossible-to-ignore family thwarts her every move. Liza wants Dorsey Fitzgerald out of her hood, but she'll settle for getting him out of her head. At first, Dorsey writes Liza Bennett off as an over-caffeinated woke weekend warrior.
