Antsy wasn't safe in her own home -- in her own bedroom -- so she ran. Down the street and around the corner and through the door of a welcoming-looking thrift shop, where she thought she might be able to call her grandmother for help. Instead, she found herself in The Shop Where Lost Things Go, an impossible jumble of shelves full of objects, all lost by their owners. And among the shelves are Doors, all leading to other worlds. Antsy can open these Doors and go through, leaving them propped open so she can return to the Shop. An old woman and a talking magpie are the Shop's proprietors, and they make her welcome, teaching her the ways of this strange but comforting world and the markets that often appear through the Doors. However, all magic has a price -- and Antsy doesn't even know, yet, what she might be paying.

This is a heart-wrenching story of innocence and childhood lost, even more explicitly so than many of the other Wayward Children stories which focus on trauma and loss. It's also lovely and comforting in many ways. It's one of the relatively stand-alone volumes of the series, in that it explores Antsy's life before she reaches the safety of Miss West's, but I don't know that I would suggest it as an entry point to the series. Highly recommended to fans, though! ( )

I feel like I've had a love-dislike relationship with the recent books in this series. McGuire has such cool ideas and compelling characters at times, but then she'll go and spend sooo much time either on the build-up to something, or saying the same idea over and over again in different ways. While it's definitely one way to emphasize something there are definitely more eloquent ways to make your point. Although this wasn't as tedious as it was in "Across the Green Grass Fields" I still felt like there was a lot of time spent at the beginning and middle of this book that could have been condensed down to allow other scenes to be built up and let the ending have a little longer to breathe. The Wayward Children series deals with many situations where children leave home due to abuse or neglect. Lost in the Moment and Found starts with Seanan McGuire reassuring readers Antsy escapes through her door before her situation escalates. As events began to unfold, the sheer terror and violation the audiobook narrator translated into Antsy’s voice broke my heart. I found myself crying as Antsy revealed to the reader the wrongness she felt, and being too young, the inability to understand what was happening to her.

When Antsy finds her door, it is to a place where people go to recover what has been lost. The Shop Where Lost Things Go. And while Antsy has a desire to go home, she knows it is no longer safe. Though she is subject to grand adventures, Antsy’s mind never strays far from what she herself lost. Antsy’s journey through grief and loss is heartbreaking. It shows how a child so young can have their innocence stolen from them, forcing them to grow up too fast.

Readers will catch glimpses of other worlds and learn more about the doors this series is based upon. Each door is another small adventure, giving Antsy moments of happiness, and allowing her to be a curious child over and over again. Allowing readers to recover alongside Antsy as she is given time to process and heal. Lost in the Moment and Found was another emotional and captivating story. Each novella is another snippet into a child’s life where the doors found them at their most vulnerable points, in order to show them their path forward. ( )

I loved this entry into the Wayward Children series! It felt so unique and I enjoyed how the mystery of the shop slowly unfolded. Antsy is a strong little girl and it was great to see her come into her own and stand up for herself. ( )
