Admiral John “Black Jack” Geary must battle dangers both within and without the Alliance, in this exciting continuation of the New York Times bestselling series. Geary knows that some political factions in the Alliance were just trying to get rid of him when he was assigned to escort a diplomatic and scientific mission to the far reaches of humanity’s expansion into the galaxy and beyond. But he views his mission as both a duty and an opportunity to make things better wherever he can. And when a crippled Rift Federation ship tumbles out of jump space, Geary leaps into action. But the survivors’ story isn’t completely adding up. As Geary investigates, he soon finds himself fending off spies and assassins while leading the fleet as it fights its way across space controlled by the mysterious and hostile aliens whom humans call enigmas. Challenges arrive at every turn, including an unknown alien species that invites the fleet to visit one of their star systems. With little information to go on, Geary must weigh the benefits of potential new allies against the possibility of a trap. The fate of the fleet—and perhaps even the future of humanity—will depend on him making the right decision. If he can stay alive long enough to do that.… (altro)

The latest in the Jack Geary series of space opera and one of the best in the series. The Alliance Fleet, along with some of their allies, has been tasked to meet the Dancers in their home space, but to do so they must get past the genocidal Enigmas first. In this installment, not only does Adm. Geary have to deal with issues of the fleet, but not there is diplomacy and subterfuge to deal with - not everyone in the fleet wants them to succeed. A good mix of space action and spy thriller. As usual the focus is on Geary and the fleet, but there's more personalities involved as this series goes on. Good stuff. ( )

The Universe continues to spawn new worlds and the Admiral is still challenged to defend what is known and explore what is not. The problems do not change, i.e. "Who is in Charge and Where"? This series stays interesting and grows more complex. ( )

Continuation of a series that is always engaging. Each novel is complete yet leaves you wanting more. After being found and revived a hundred years later, Admiral John " Black Jack" Geary has a lot to live up to. He's a legend twice the size of ordinary people. The mission is to make new alliances with an alien group but have they been set up for failure?
I received this book from Netgalley. Thanks to the author and publishers for making it available. ( )

Adm John Geary and his fleet's diplomatic mission to the alien race known as Dancers continues, as elements within both the fleet and the civilian experts seem to want the mission to fail. Leaving the former Syndicate planet Midway, first they must fight their way past enigma-held space. Then they will have to persuade the Dancers to talk to them. And a new danger awaits.

A worthy continuation of a worthy military science fiction saga, with much less jingoism than most of the genre. ( )
