Welcome to the Cypher is a child's first introduction to the art form of freestyle rap. Written with the distinctive rhythm and rhyme of hip hop, this book teaches not only the vocabulary of rap--finger snaps, beatbox, and claps--but the many ways to express who you are through your art. It is a jubilant invitation to speak loud and talk fast. The illustrations are callbacks to the colors and shapes of hip hop's birth, but also a nod to the modern era, with its precise lines. The pages are filled with light, shadow, and magic, highlighting the words that call young people to explore their voice. Recommended for elementary school readers.

Making rap approachable and move it away from the "gang" or "thug" connotations that it usually has....that's a plus

But starting the book off with an old guy saying "come here......" Yeah no (
