You won’t want to miss the adventures of Little Miss History when she travels to the Battleship USS Iowa. Children and parents will be delighted with this story because they’ll learn fascinating facts about the big ship. For example, did you know The Iowa was nicknamed “The Big Stick.” She was the leading ship in her class, as well as the fourth one titled after the state of Iowa.
The Iowa was the site of many important meetings, like the one in 1943 between President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill. President Roosevelt had special accommodations in his suite; a special bathtub and room for his wheelchair.
Did you know The USS Iowa had a mascot named Vicky? Vicky was a dog who wore a sailor suit. She loved sleeping in the same room as President Roosevelt. Vicky was honored with nine battleship ribbons and two bronze stars. Today, an image of Vicky guides children on tours of the ship.
During her time in active service, The Iowa defended America during World War Two, The Korean War, and the Cold War.
The Iowa was decommissioned in October of 1990, after nineteen years of service. But she was reinstated in 1999 and again in 2006. In 2011, the stately ship was moved to the USS Iowa Museum.
Children and families will love this entertaining and educational book. They will discover all kinds of interesting facts about the life of the USS Iowa. As in all of the books in the Little Miss History series, the illustrations are beautiful. I highly recommend this book. ( )
