Very good book. I especially like the "How to Get the Most Out of this Book" section. It gives several good tips on how to learn these vocab words faster and explains why to even try to expand your vocabulary. The layout is extremely easy to use (even as an eBook) with clear formatting differences between entry words, synonyms & antonyms, and exercises. The checkup exercises included after each chapter are very helpful too! For those who want extra practice, even more self-test exercises are available on vibrantpublishing's website. If you're gonna read this book, be prepared to take your time and think deep because alot of these vocab words may be unfamiliar. But by following their guidelines for learning them, you'll be expanding your vocabulary in no time!

Being a lifelong lover of words -- instilled in me as a child with the “word power” test in the monthly Reader’s Digest -- I always find it interesting to discover a different wordlist. This one, which helps you prepare for the GRE, is now in its 6th edition. Yet it can still be read and studied as a standalone vocabulary builder. The GRE Master Wordlist is a straightforward, alphabetical term list with simple pronunciation information, part of speech, definition (called synonym), antonym(s) if applicable, and finally, the usage of the word in a sentence. The book is divided into 16 word lists so that it is not overwhelming to work your way through the 1,535 terms. At the end of each word list/section, you are rewarded for your studies with three quizzes: selecting synonyms (multiple choice), selecting antonyms (multiple choice), and a fill-in-the-blank (sentence) exercise. These three quizzes cover only 20-22 of the 100 words you just studied. As we all learn language and retain it through different means and channels, this particular learning style (working through a large list of terms at a time) can be useful, especially when studying for an exam. By increasing your own vocabulary, you will have “more words to choose from” in the written portions of the exam, for example. Having a larger vocabulary helps with the verbal reasoning section of the GRE in terms of the text completion, sentence equivalence, and reading comprehension tests. A richer vocabulary also makes it easier to incorporate vocabulary terms that are new to you in your own everyday communication. I compared the wordlist in this edition to similar GRE test preparation vocabulary lists and found a greater than 50% commonality among the lists. Although this wordlist doesn’t explain why these words were explicitly chosen, they must be because they have appeared on past GRE exams. Please note that there are typos in some of the quizzes so don’t be disheartened when you think you made the wrong selection; it just turns out the 6th edition is occasionally incorrect. The ebook also provides a link for additional quizzes to take at the Vibrant Publishers website. In early March 2022, I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to Vibrant Publishers for providing me this digital copy.

For one who has a mediocre vocabulary, although college educated and 74 yo, I continue to desire to strengthen my vocabulary and other brain skills. This practical textbook/vocabulary builder/study guide for the GRE is excellent. Each of the 1535 essential words have its pronunciation, part of speech, synonyms, antonyms, plus a sentence using the word in context. There are tests in the book as well as online practice tests. Plus there are answer 'keys' for each word's practice tests.
Overall, I found this to give me a substantial grasp of the targeted vocabulary word as well as ways to decipher which words I need to practice more.
The publishers' reassurance that these 1535 words will cover the words tested on the GRE give me confidence that I will have enough under my belt in order to take the test...that is, IF I will do my part and STUDY!

Versions 4 and 6 were 200 pages, but version 5 was more than twice as many pages. One wonders WHY version 6 (2021-2022) was cut back so drastically. It is a very useful book IF any reader(s) would only USE it, which I expect would be the case for early high school students who care about their capacities for reading complex texts with and for understanding. An essential tool. Says '2022' on the book, but may have been PUBLISHED 'way back there' in 2021... ( )

This is a small dictionary of 1535 words for vocabulary building. A commerical dictionary would be more useful in the long run but if you want to focus, here is a list. But there is no discussion of how the words were chosen and you might be studying the wrong list.

I received a review copy of this book directly from the publisher through Library Thing Early Reviewers. ( )
