Determined to finish the AI program she started with her father before he abandoned her, Lydia puts all her mental and emotional energy into perfecting Henry, the program named after her brother who was killed in a car accident. That same wreck left her with physical scars, but more importantly, emotional ones that are exacerbated almost daily by her mother's drowning in grief, and her former best friend's anger and scorn. Emma was hurt badly in that same accident and now seems intent upon punishing Lydia even though they were sitting beside each other in the back seat.
