In the late 1930s, the Spanish Civil War was both a cause célèbre and a true international flashpoint, garnering support from thousands from Europe and the Americas who saw the fight as a crucial bulwark against the spread of global fascism. A comprehensive account of the Irish contribution to the Republican side. Considerable sections on the context in Irish politics. A little confusing on the precise structures within the International Brigades. The maps are inadequate and even with a magnifying glass it is usually impossible to follow the text describing battles.
