The author speaks of informal quilting - a merger between traditional piecing, improvisational quilting and applique techniques. Important to note is that there would not be any modern quilting if not for quilt makers who came before and paved the way for modern quilting. Examples are the Amish in North America. Improvisational quilting, a more abstract and free form approach to quilt making is rooted in African-American quilting. Most well known examples are by the Gee's Bend quilters of Alabama.
Being reminded o the history of quilt making put me in aw of those who did not have the tools or materials a modern quilter uses today.
This book teaches you how to master the basic quilting stitches and techniques and apply them to a sereis of creative projects you find in the book. The focus is on HAND STITCHING and ecourages you to experiment with textiles. It is compartmentalized into sections and tips for Essential Stitches and Techniques, Construction, Patchwork, Applique .
All of those sections come also with illustrations.
This book reaffirms my belief in the importance of applying essential techniques for the success of a MODERN QUILT. I highly recommend this book for beginners and advanced quilters alike!
