Throughout the book there is repetition of one phrase, “I have heard of a land...” this phrase emphasizes the African American woman’s wish for shows the woman’s hope that time will get better and there will be equality. As the book goes on we see the woman’s dreams slowly coming true, moving to Oklahoma, building a home, tending to crops, and enjoying what is now her new life with more freedom. ( )

Could an African American woman be totally free in a land that is free to everyone, Oklahoma? When we hear the word "pioneer" we tend to think of people other than African Americans. I Have Heard of a Land dispels that mindset. It features an African American woman who has set her sights on not being a slave anymore and moving to Oklahoma where she can be free from the illusion of being freed slavery and the tortures it brought. Planting and harvesting for her own family and being able to actually sleep in the house that she built was among other reasons why she seeks refuge in Oklahoma. ( )

This poetry are signs of hope and imagination of being in this plan that is so safe it can only be imagined. This is what i took from this book. I like the illustration and notions of the poems, it flowed so much. The story builds but would have to make more interesting for its k-3 grade audience. ( )

Before the story begins, we see a woman looking at a sign that says “free land in Oklahoma!”. The book looks into the hopes and dreams of this character. She dreams of being free, having her own land and house. The illustration shows us that her dreams are becoming her reality. She is seen traveling to Oklahoma with her family, building her home, tending to her crops, and enjoying her new life. ( )

This book is referring to a woman that wants to make her life better in a place that is possible. She wants to be able to live in a place where she can make decisions for herself and not have to work extremely hard to the point of passing out. This book has a great life lesson for children that they should have dreams and strive to make them happen.

I believe the medium of the art is watercolors. The words match up what the illustrations are portraying. The narrator wants to be in a place where she can be free and have better options in her life. Most of the illustrations are portraying open space. They are showing that she has endless possibilities in the land she is referring to. She also will be able to surround herself with people that are willing to help their neighbor. It is hinting that the place she wants to be strongly believes that if your neighbor succeed, you succeed. ( )
