Fiction. Mystery. A chilling murder in a prestigious prep school is at the heart of this riveting new novel from acclaimed author Charlie Donlea, featuring forensic reconstructionist Rory Moore and her psychologist partner, Lane Phillips. Inside the walls of Indiana's elite Westmont Preparatory High School, expectations run high and rules are strictly enforced. But in the woods beyond the manicured campus and playing fields sits an abandoned boarding house that is infamous among Westmont's students as a late-night hangout. Here, only one rule applies: don't let your candle go out??unless you want the Man in the Mirror to find you. . . . One year ago, two students were killed there in a grisly slaughter. The case has since become the focus of a hit podcast, The Suicide House. Though a teacher was convicted of the murders, mysteries and questions remain. The most urgent among them is why so many students who survived that horrific night have returned to the boarding house??to kill themselves. Rory, an expert in reconstructing cold cases, is working on The Suicide House podcast with Lane, recreating the night of the killings in order to find answers that have eluded the school, the town, and the police. But the more they learn about the troubled students, the chillingly stoic culprit, and a dangerous game gone tragically wrong, the more convinced they become that something sinister is still happening. Inside Westmont Prep, the game hasn't ended. It thrives on secrecy and silence. And for its players, there may be no way to win??or to survi… (altro)

The Suicide House is a novel that combines diverse elements (podcasting and YouTube , true crime, secret society, deviant psychology) seamlessly into a narrative that consists of several threads set apart by time and viewpoint- a juggling act well done.
The plot revolves around two gruesome deaths in the vicinity of a boarding school and several consecutive follow-up suicides for which there are no sensible explanations.
As the case is starting to grow cold, Lane Phillips, a psychologist and Rory Moore, a forensic reconstructionist who suffers herself from various forms of psychological issues are asked for assistance. As far as main character go, the idiosyncrasies of Rory are sufficiently weird to garner my interest but at no time alienate through her actions or a particular set of behavior(s). Another balancing act well executed.
The gravity of the mystery of an abandoned boarding house, which is - you guessed it- the eponymous suicide house is distributed across many events and viewpoints each contributing a piece of the puzzle to solving the great secret. This enables the final revelation to remain elusive until close to the end and only the patient reader - it is a long story - gets rewarded when the final bits of information disentangle the “Who has done it” conundrum. Donlea is a master of the genre: the twists, red herrings, and investigators who are just as interesting as the crimes they’re looking into. The crimes in this one didn’t grab me quite as much as those in its predecessor, Some Choose Darkness, but I was glad to be back in the world of Rory Moore and Lane Phillips. The authors note hints at more to come in this series, and I’ll be excited to read whatever Donlea puts out next. ( )

If you liked "Some Choose Darkness" then you will like this one as well. I like books with boarding schools and podcasts. Great writing, good pacing, three-dimensional characters. Another solid novel from Charlie Donlea.

Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books for an ARC. ( )

Although there are a lot of different moving parts to this book, it is easy to follow. A secret society, “The Man in the Mirror” game, students committing suicide - and a cover up aimed at distracting everyone, are just some of these parts.

Each part is it’s own boxcar linked to a speeding train heading toward total obliteration and carnage. Enjoy the ride. No one makes it out alive.

Alternating between two years and a mystery person’s journal entries Donlea weaves a dark and compelling tale of friendships - the secrets they entail - and a mystery that takes down any character trying to figure it out.

Is there a price for wanting to fit in?

This is the first book I’ve read by Donlea, but will def be reading his other work. ( )

In the second installment of Rory Moore and Lane Phillips, Rory and Lane are drawn into a sinister group of deaths among students that go to a house and kill themselves. But why? A podcaster and reporter are trying to determine what really happened at this house, and why so many are being found dead. As the danger gets closer and closer to them, Rory stumbles upon a clue that brings them closer to solving the mystery and identifying the real mystery behind all the deaths.
This is disturbing and sad to think of the manipulation of a person's mind. Spooky book and once again, Rory comes through. The ending hints of many, many more adventures for Rory and Lane - I can't wait!! ( )
