In the few days in the life of Izzy that this book covered she went to school but never did homework and skipped school and talked about it too casually. She bullied some kindergartners and annoyed her best friend. Her personality was not appealing to me at all. She never went through anything that caused her any growth or change—a very stagnant character. This book is a fun. Nothing to special. I was expecting to like this book more, and be a bit more invested in the characters. However, that was not the case. Izzy annoyed me from time to time, and sometimes I thought that she was winey. I did like the part with the dogs, and the fact that it's an open fact that Izzy is adopted. I can appreciate that. For some reason I did not really like the writing style. I think children would have liked it better, which is to be expected as it's a children's book. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

"Seven-year-old Isabel is an adopted, only child, who lives with her single mom and her nanny, Rosa. Isabel's best friend is Zoë. Zoë adores the shenanigans they get up to together, EXCEPT when it gets them into trouble, which does happen now and then! Getting into trouble is Zoë's idea of CATASTROPHE. Each time it happens, it means the friendship is on the rocks -- freeze-out time. Whenever this happens, it's really tough on Isabel, who desperately misses her best friend and doesn't feel like herself at all. Isabel decides that her problem must be that she has TOO MUCH LOVE and not enough people to give it to. Luckily, her mom and Rosa present her with a solution! They decide to adopt a dog. "Just like when Mom adopted me!" Isabel thinks. Now Isabel will have her very own baby to LOVE LOVE LOVE with all her heart. But she soon discovers taking care of a baby is not as easy as she thought ... And when things go wrong, that's when Zoë and Isabel's friendship really shines through. The illustrations are my favourite part of this book. It's definitely a middle grade book aimed for middle graders. As an adult, I didn't enjoy it too much but I can easily see younger kids loving it. This book is playful, fun and quite sweet. There's lots of goofy antics that Izzy gets into during this book. I just feel like adults reading this with their middle graders won't get a kick out of it. This seems to be solely a book for only middle graders to enjoy. It felt too random and goofy for me, but that's kind of the point - I'm not the audience for this book. I simply enjoying jumping into today's middle grade books to see how literature has changed.
Positives:
1. Amazing illustrations
2. Short chapters
3. Goofy antics
4. Story highlighting a single Mother!
5. Puppies!
Overall, I think middle graders will enjoy it but I didn't enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed other middle grade novels. It's too random and silly for me, but it's still an excellent read. Middle graders who love comedy and fun will enjoy this.
Two out of five stars.
