The story is well written and the illustrations are very nice, but I had trouble with the chosen subject. The Haenyeo are female Korean sea divers. This is the story of a young girl learning to dive with her grandmother. After the story we learn that the real haenyeo truly use no breathing equipment and have a 17 pound lead belt and add up to 60 pounds of harvest to it. The idea of a young girl doing such a hard and dangerous job when modern technology could do it in a safer way bothered me. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

This book is about a young girl who wants to become a haenyeo or "woman of the sea" (a diver) like her grandma.
This book would be useful in teaching about the roles that women play in different cultures and facing fears.
