She Needed to be Seen... As a lady's companion, Clara Hartwright never receives much attention from anyone. And that's precisely how she likes it. With a stormy past, and an unconventional plan for her future, it's far safer to remain invisible. But when her new employer is invited to a month-long holiday at a remote coastal abbey, Clara discovers that she may not be as invisible as she'd hoped. At least, not as far as one gentleman is concerned. He Wanted to be Heard... Neville Cross has always been more comfortable with animals than people. An accident in his youth has left him with a brain injury that affects his speech. Forming the words to speak to his childhood friends is difficult enough. Finding the right things to say to a lovely young lady's companion seems downright impossible. But Miss Hartwright is no ordinary companion. In fact, there may not be anything ordinary about her at all. During a bleak Devon winter, two sensitive souls forge an unexpected friendship. But when Clara needs him most, will Neville find the courage to face his fears? Or is saying goodbye to her the most heroic thing he can do?… (altro)

Fairly decent. I'm always a bit disappointed when an author changes a character when it comes to his/her book in a series. She had set this hero up as someone with definite brain damage but here it turns out he just has slow speech. Okay but that's not how he was portrayed in the first book. ( )

4.5 rounded up. This actually ended up being my favorite of this series. Both main characters work for a living, with neither turning out to be secret nobility or an heiress or something. Which I liked. And the hero's childhood brain trauma, which affects his word recall, didn't diminish his appeal as a hero. He was easy to grow fond of. When he first appeared in the earlier books I honestly thought he might be glossed over, or maybe be a secondary romance in someone else's book, or just get a novella, but I'm very glad his HEA counts for just as much as anyone else's. The dogs and horses were sort of secondary characters, and were involved to a good degree, not just an added afterthought, but also not the focus of every scene. It was well done. ( )

A sweet Victorian romance centered around Christmas about two broken people that fate brings together. Clara, lady’s companion, arrives with a very old Pug which she takes to the barn and meets Neville, the estate agent who suffers with a severe stuttering impediment. The romance builds slowly as they get to know one another and of course there is some miscommunication and restrictions because of the times. ( )

December 1860. Greyfriar Abbey, North Devon. The Christmas period has brought the four orphans, now adults to the Abbey for a long overdue reunion.
Clara Hartwright has come as Mrs Bainbridge's companion, the aunt to the now married Laura Archer. While hiding her past, Clara financially supports, with the help of her mother, her brother Simon at University.
Meanwhile the last of the unmarried orphans is more comfortable spending time with animals, but then he meets Clara. Can both overcome their pasts or will their courage fail them.
Another very enjoyable and well-written Victorian romance. With its cast of very lovable characters. Certainly a delightful end to the series.
Although it can easily be read as a standalone story I would highly recommend the whole series.

The Winter Companion - Matthews

Another sweet Victorian romance, the final on in a series of four. It’s Christmas, and Neville Cross, the only unmarried parish orphan, falls for the paid companion of an abbey guest. Clara Hartwright has much in common with the first three female protagonists of the series. They are all women who are negatively impacted by the social and legal limitations placed on women. As with the first three books in the series, the romance is predictable and happy. Pleasant reading with good historical atmosphere that didn’t require a great deal of my attention. ( )
