What a delight. Good Characters, funny and endearing. Sweet support. Although there is a part of the story where the gender fluid Birdie is required to wear traditionally boy clothes, the family eventually gets in a place of defending him and the bullying takes place mostly off scene and does not feel too traumatic. I would let my gender fluid child read this. ( )

Things I really liked about this book -- it does an excellent job of demonstrating the kind of well-meaning unfairness that deals absolutely soul-crushing damage to young people. It has a hopeful message and a quirky, caring community. It deals with mental health and poverty in a realistic and compassionate way. Everyone in the book seems to be struggling with something -- like humans do.

I appreciate how the author has woven so many different stories together: from Birdie and Jack's grief over losing their mom, to Birdie's fiercely beautiful gender freedom, to one uncle's struggle with PTSD and the other's with showing emotion at all, to the Jack's friend, who appears to be in a neglectful and potentially abusive situation. All of that and more, but they are funny and fierce -- great characters, with authentic kid voices. ( )

A touching read, as siblings struggle with the loss of their mother. Jack and Birdie find Uncle Carl to be wonderful, as he spoils them. Jack and her brother, Birdie then move to Uncle Patrick's home. Uncle Patrick is much different than Uncle Carl and struggles with understanding Birdie's desire to wear lip gloss and glittery things. Jack wants to help Birdie and tries to be more like Mom for Birdie. Jack is not an adult or Mom-will she be able to help Birdie? And what about Jack? Who will help her? Could Uncle Patrick learn more about his niece, nephew, and himself as this new family dynamic coalesce?

Deep discussions surrounding grief, mental illness, acceptance of others, and redefining family could be generated throughout this beautifully written, humorous at times, book. Definitely one to add to your TBR list! ( )
