Murder, evil and injustice... Most of the large law firms held Christmas parties but Anderson's were renown for the attendance of judges, eminent silks, the brightest stars from the Bar's junior ranks and the odd politician. No expense was spared - the champagne was champagne, the caviar, Russian beluga - not a sausage roll was to be seen. The opulence of Anderson & Co was not restricted to the second floor. When the lift doors opened at the lower level, Mark was surprised at the facilities... the kidney-shaped swimming pool with the jacuzzi at one end, bubbling and steaming as if on the verge of eruption. Subtle lighting and strategic shrubbery made it hard to believe he was actually in the basement of a city law firm.Ahead were various exercise machines. Entering the gym area, quietly impressed at the lengths the firm had gone to keep their staff fit, he gagged, almost vomiting at the scene. In the centre of the room, lying face down on a bench was the well-built body of a young man, perhaps around his own age. He was naked. Legs were splayed obscenely apart and one had slipped to the floor. His head was twisted around so that his face - eyes open in a deathly stare - was directed at Mark. Clearly, there had been a struggle.Pink tape, the type used by solicitors to tie up their briefs to barristers, was twisted several times around his neck, the ends draped untidily over the bench...… (altro)

Sleeping with Angels is a legal thriller set in Queensland, Australia written by an Australian author. Whilst the cover of this book isn't particularly great and gives off an air of amateur writing, the actual writing within is excellent. If I were to draw a comparison I would say the novel reminds me of somewhere between John Grisham and Michael Ridpath.

The story opens with a waiter discovering a dead body within the premises of a prestigious law firm, a law firm which he later joins upon completing his legal training. It is here that the story becomes more interesting, parellel to our waiter come lawyer Mark's heavy workload and slow discovery of anamolies at the law firm we learn of a gay executive who regularly attends an exclusive gay club in Brisbane. The whole time the identity of this person is a mystery with small hints here and there, all the while the executive appears to be slowly becoming unhinged, presumably with work pressures so the reader enitivably looks toward the legal partners and their actions yet there's no clear picture of whom it is.

It's structured extremely well and keeps you guessing until the very end without relying on cheap writing tricks.

I think fans of John Grisham would enjoy this, whilst the courtroom action of said author is absent, it is nonetheless a good legal thriller. Fans of Australian crime should also give it a look, as should anyone interested in a good crime/mystery novel. ( )
