I voted for Richard Nixon in 1972 and regretted it soon afterwards. I find him fascinating, though, and thoroughly enjoyed rehashing his accomplishments since his resignation. Quite a comeback. ( ) I was browsing the new books in our local library when I first noticed this book. Initially, I ignored it because I had experienced a terrible feeling of loss when his mishandling of Watergate led to his resignation from the presidency. I thought at the time that it was simply incredible that such a smart man would bring himself down. And then, on a subsequent visit, I noticed it still on the shelf so I decided to take it and read it, or at least try. I am glad I did. Nixon lived on for 20 years after he left the White House. I think very many men would have found a deep hole, jumped in and pulled a cover over the opening. I know from other reading that most people expected this, some even demanding it. He didn't. He didn't try to reclaim a position of power but instead sought to serve his country (and himself) by ultimately becoming an Elder Statesman. 10 of his 11 books were written after Watergate. He established relationships with every President beginning with Reagen and, most astonishingly, his strongest was with Mr. Clinton. Could our Presidents have gotten along without his input? Most assuredly. But also most assuredly what he brought to the table was hugely important. Even more impressive was what he taught us about not looking back. He claims he didn't but I wonder about that. Even so, he worked strenuously for his country, even affter that country had cut him off. For the doubters, I urge you to read this book for your edification. It has often been said that Mr. Nixon was a complex person. The same could be said about any of us. It is remarkable that he soldiered on. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
