Ten hardworking puppies all want jobs. One by one they each get a job from being a therapy dog in training to being a search and rescue dog. As each puppy gets a job, the reader counts down how many puppies are left still needing jobs. At the end of the story, once all the puppies are done with work for the day they all get to play together

The book "Hardworking Puppies" could be used for a 1st grade class as an interactive read aloud as a review for subtraction to make sure students understand subtraction and how it can be used in our daily lives. It also can be used to teach students about the community and what it is to be a hard worker which overall can teach responsibility.

I had mixed feelings about this book. I liked it because the dogs and the hardworking humans were all very relatable. This made the book stand out tremendously to me. The illustrations also enhanced the story because they were colorful and went along with what the text was saying. On the other hand, I didn’t like this text because it was very repetitive which made the subtraction aspect of the book very easy. The subtraction was a huge part of the book, and it was the same thing the whole time: they subtracted 1 puppy each time. I would have liked if they made it a little harder subtraction wise. For example, the lifeguard could have taken 2 puppies. This would have made the kids subtract 2, instead of 1. I think the main idea of this book is subtraction. The book did a good job of visually showing (through the illustrations) subtraction, which was very helpful. ( )

I liked this book because of well written plot. The main story is about how puppies are finding job to help people. While it describes how puppies are finding their job, it gives different types of job that dogs can actually can be. While many readers might though the dog only as pet, this book gives students to think about different perspective. Not only that, this book is also giving mathematical contact. Starting with 10 puppies, as each one find their job, next page start with the number one less than the page before. As readers read this book, they will test their knowledge of subtraction again. I liked this book for many reasons, the first because it shows that dogs are capable of having jobs and helping humans. Second because it helps students learn how to count down by ten. The colors in the book are my favorite part, the illustrator drew each dog differently and give each a different color. For example, there are small and big dogs, and almost every color dog. The Plot of the story is very well organized, the author counts down by 10 and by the time she gets to zero each dog has a job. The story is very simple, but thats what makes it easy for the students in the younger grades to understand it. The main idea I think is to just help each dog get a job, some go with firefighters or security guards and in the end there is only one small puppy left and he gets to go with a loving family. ( )
