A cute and poignant book about dealing with loss, shows a boy trying to play with his grandfather to no avail until he simplifies the conversation and draws grandpa in by talking about his favorite things. The ending is great, almost a tear-jerker, and reads at least as good for adults as for children.
I'd recommend for any younger reader, as a bedtime book, and for anyone who recently suffered a loss in the family.

Absolutely sweet! The illustrations are fun, colorful and emotive. The story is delightful and sweet. It really handles the subject of grief in a way that a child could understand it, but also touches the hearts of adults. The nine year ole and I read it together and then my mother read it, then my grandmother and both of them came away from the book with tears in their eyes. A wonderful addition to any library. ( )

Oh, how I loved this book. Both illustrations and story line fit perfectly together.

Henry is young. His Grandpa has come to live with his family after the sad loss of his long-term wife.

Henry doesn't understand why Grandpa stays in his room and refuses to interact with anyone.

One day, Henry decides to ask his Grandpa his favorite threes. As Henry leads the way by describing his favorite three top sandwiches, it unlocks something in Grandpa and he too begins to note his favorite threes.

When Henry lists his top three grannies, they are:

"The granny who is dead.
Granny Agnes who lives on top of the shoe stop
And the granny in "Little Red Riding Hood."

At first Grandpa didn't answer, but then , after a pause he remembers

Granny when she danced in the moonlight
Granny when she watered roses
and Granny when she first held baby Henry.

This is a beautiful book that deals gently and powerfully with the subject of grief.
