"At eighteen, Alexandra Wickham is presented to King George V and Queen Mary in an exquisite white lace and satin dress her mother has ordered from Paris. With her delicate blond looks, she is a stunning beauty who seems destined for a privileged life. But fate, a world war, and her own quietly rebellious personality lead her down a different path. By 1939, Europe is on fire and England is at war. From her home in idyllic Hampshire, Alex makes her way to London as a volunteer in the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. But she has skills that draw the attention of another branch of the service. Fluent in French and German, she would make the perfect secret agent. Within a year, Alex is shocking her family in trousers and bright red lipstick. They must never know about the work she does--no one can know, not even the pilot she falls in love with. While her country and those dearest to her pay the terrible price of war, Alex learns the art of espionage, leading to life-and-death missions behind enemy lines and a long career as a spy in exotic places and historic times. Spy follows Alex's extraordinary adventures in World War II and afterward in India, Pakistan, Morocco, Hong Kong, Moscow, and Washington, D.C., when her husband, Richard, enters the foreign service and both become witnesses to a rapidly changing world from post-war to Cold War. She lives life on the edge, with a secret she must always keep hidden"--… (altro)

Spy by Danielle Steel
Hampshire, England 1939
Starts out with Alex and she's just had her coming out party and life continues as the war starts and her brothers enlist. She does too as a driver in the city.
Soon after others hear of her expertise in many foreign languages and she gets a job with SOE. She loves the spy field but knows she can't talk about it for 20 years after the facts.
She develops a relationship with Richard and he has his own secrets as he's a pilot.
Love how the story goes, hardships and rewards. Parents take on a dozen children who are sometimes orphaned and other times they return to their parents after the war.
I recall a Walton family show where they had children from England come to live in VA with them.
As years go on, we get to follow her travel with her spouse to so many countries. Even her services are needed. Love hearing about MI6 as I've only seen glimpses of them in the books I read.
Love the knitting especially that her mother and others tending to the children did for the war efforts.
Alex is so talented even with her own children. Locations are so precise and clear.
She meets many men who want to sway her to their side....love hearing of the clothes she's able to wear and clothing stores in Paris.
She is able to find out so many details of others who are trying to bribe her....
Love history, romance, travel and customs in other countries, food, fashion, landscapes in Hampshire, family life and knowing when to retire. Something for everyone.
Borrowed this book from Libby from my local library and this is my honest opinion. ( )

Alexandra Wickham is a stunning beauty who seems destined for a privileged life. But fate, a world war and her own quietly rebellious nature lead her down a different path. By 1939, Britain is at war. From her home in idyllic Hampshire Alex makes her way to London as a nursing volunteer. But her fluency in French and German draws the attention of another, more secret, branch of the service.

I haven't read any Danielle Steel for a long time, but since she's writing what's trending these days, I thought I'd give it a chance. Unfortunately, the WWII part is only half the book. The rest was interesting, but I didn't feel quite as invested into her character as the book went on. Overall, though, it was a pretty good book. ( )
