"Nnedi Okorafor was never supposed to be paralyzed. A college track star and budding entomologist, Nnedi's lifelong battle with scoliosis was just a bump in her plan--something a simple operation would easily correct. But when Nnedi wakes from the surgery to find she can't move her legs, her entire sense of self begins to waver. Confined to a hospital bed for months, unusual things begin to happen. Psychedelic bugs crawl her hospital walls; strange dreams visit her nightly. Nnedi begins to put these experiences into writing, conjuring up strange, fantastical stories. What Nnedi discovers during her confinement would prove to be the key to her life as a successful science fiction author: In science fiction, when something breaks, something greater often emerges from the cracks. In Broken Places & Outer Spaces, Nnedi takes the reader on a journey from her hospital bed deep into her memories, from her painful first experiences with racism as a child in Chicago to her powerful visits to her parents' hometown in Nigeria. From Frida Kahlo to Mary Shelly, she examines great artists and writers who have pushed through their limitations, using hardship to fuel their work. Through these compelling stories and her own, Nnedi reveals a universal truth: What we perceive as limitations have the potential to become our greatest strengths--far greater than when we were unbroken. A guidebook for anyone eager to understand how their limitations might actually be used as a creative springboard, Broken Places & Outer Spaces is an inspiring look at how to open up new windows in your mind."--Provided by publisher.… (altro)

This is an inspiring book, though it helps to go into it knowing that (1) it is short, and (2) it is about Okorafor's personal experience only. This is not a book about disability in general, but how her personal journey helped her to grow as a person and a writer. ( )

An inspirational memoir, focused on what it means to have to (re)define yourself in a new way, finding pleasure and acceptance in that role.

As in some of the fiction I've read of Okorafor's, the liminal is an area she explores greatly. The between world of two ends of a spectrum... ( )

This short memoir by one of my favorite authors is authentic, raw, hopeful and inspirational -- much like her fictional characters and worlds. ( )

An incredible story of overcoming a (massive) obstacle. And even better then just overcoming the obstacle; using that experience, that raw pain, that unique perspective to define her, enhance her, and make a purpose and use out of it. Writing doesn't require sacrifice and pain and sorrow like some believe, but sometimes using it, harnessing the pain, the sacrifice, and the sorrow, makes for far better writing.

Like Diane Nguyen wants and craves in the final half of Season 6 of BoJack Horseman, "I want to have good damage." She wanted her pain and suffering to be FOR something, to serve some purpose, to define her, to be able to use it in some way to benefit people and to provide meaning to her life and thus meaning to the suffering. It doesn't always work that way. But, luckily, for Nnedi Okorafor it did. I think we can all relate to the two of these women. Wanting to use DAMAGE to make it into "GOOD DAMAGE" and to give it all meaning. Okorafor does that and infuses her writing with characters all but ripped from her circumstances, enhanced in the way she wishes she could be. Its inspirational, interesting, and provides for unique characters that most of us wouldn't read or see, especially with her unique blend of Nigerian and American storytelling. ( )
