"In The Yankee Widow, gifted storyteller Linda Lael Miller explores the complexities and heartbreak that families experienced as men took up arms to preserve the nation and defend their way of life. Told in a smart, assured and compelling voice, this is the story of Caroline, the young wife and childhood sweetheart of Jacob, who together live on a farm raising their daughter, Rachel, just outside of Gettysburg. When Jacob joins the Northern army to do his duty and help save the Union, no one anticipates he will not return. Caroline gets news that he is wounded and has been taken to Washington, DC, with his regiment, and so she must find her way there and navigate the thousands of other wounded soldiers to find him. Thus begins this novel that focuses on the strong women and men of both sides and both races who sacrificed so much and loved so well during this critical juncture in American history."--… (altro)

Caroline Hammond's husband Jacob is wounded at Chancellorsville, where he fought on the Union side. He has a brief moment while on the field with Southern officer Bridger Winslow, and Caroline meets Rogan McBride, a Union officer, in Washington, where she goes to find Jacob. Bridger and Rogan are best friends, fighting on opposite sides and dreading the day they'll meet in battle. Caroline brings Jacob's body home to their farm in Gettysburg, and Caroline, Rogan, and Bridger meet again in July during the famous battle.
There's also a nice subplot with Enoch, the ex-slave who works for the Hammonds and Jubie, a pregnant escaped slave. Ms. Miller writes with good historical detail about the days leading to the battle and the aftermath. There are also interesting snippets about life on a Pennsylvania farm in the Civil War period. Well-researched and highly emotional, this book encapsulates everything I love about the Civil War. It reminds me a little of John Jakes' North and South trilogy, but certainly stands on its own two figurative feet. I'm left with feelings of grief, wistfulness, and hope- which is just how I've felt the two times I've wandered around Gettysburg National Military Park.

I highly recommend for Civil War buffs like myself who often find themselves wondering about the people behind the history. I'm honestly surprised at how much I loved reading this book. ( )

This book is wonderful - you get pulled into each character's story immediately. I only hope there will be a sequel or two down the road as the ending begs for one, and I need to know what happens to the daughter.

I've been a Linda Lael Miller fan for decades, she has never let me down. Recommend this one to everyone. ( )

I have always loved Linda Lael Miller’s books – and this one is no exception. I was thrilled when I found out I won it from GoodReads through their Giveaways program. This is a well-written historical fiction revolving around a young Yankee widow living on a farm just outside of Gettysburg, PA. The characters are believable and likeable – the setting is realistic. There is a lot of history – a little romance – a great combination!
Ms. Miller often writes books that are connected by the characters. I hope that she is planning on doing that now. This book tells the story of a young Yankee woman and her connection to two men. A Confederate young woman is introduced in this book who is also connected to the same two men. Her story should be next! ( )

Reading the title of this book we knew that Caroline is a widow, but we also meet her husband, and the realities of this horrible war, a tear is all that he is offering, and your heart breaks a little.
Most of this story takes place in Pennsylvania, and we put faces, thanks to the author, to what life might have been like during this horrific time in the history of our country.
I was quickly drawn into this story, and was soon hiding in the secret room with those that needed not to be seen.
There is also offered up some sweet romance in the trying time, but here you will have to read to the end to see how all of this is pulled together, and see who survives to live on.

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Harlequin, and was not required to give a positive review. ( )
