"Murray and Wearmouth's latest THE BRINK is a white-knuckled rollercoaster. This novel is chocked full of everything I love: strange creatures, a world teetering on the edge, and heroes who I'd want at my side during any firefight. This isn't just a story hopped on steroids--but one injected with nitrous and blazing on all cylinders. Give me more!" --James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestseller of Crucible  The sequel to the international bestseller (including #1 Sunday Times bestseller) Awakened, by one of the stars of TruTV's Impractical Jokers and a bestselling science fiction author. Former NYC Mayor Tom Cafferty has been haunted by the horror of a single day. The opening of the brand new Z-train subway line beneath the Hudson River--the supposed shining moment of his tenure. But the ribbon-cutting ceremony turned deadly when the train carrying Cafferty's wife and other citizens was attacked by a horde of hyper intelligent, bloodthirsty creatures previously unknown to humanity. Everything changed for Cafferty, ex-NYPD officer Sarah Bowcut, and tech-expert Diego Munoz that day. They had uncovered the deadly truth: the attack was no accident. And now the creatures that wreaked havoc underneath New York have spread worldwide, and with a massive cover-up--and a secret organization holding nations hostage with the knowledge of how to kill them--Cafferty's team must fight against impossible odds to save the entire planet from an apocalyptic scale disaster. An explosive and thrilling international adventure, the stakes are even higher in the latest book from bestselling duo James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth!  … (altro)

I loved the first book,Awakened, and was lookung forward to this one. Unfortunately, this book was not as thrilling as the first. Awakened was a tight monster book about people trapped underground facing an unknown foe. In the Brink we get an international thriller where politics play a big role and the creatures are secondary performers at best. I also didn’t care for Cafferty’s deep dive into fanaticism.

This book was good and I recommend it if you’ve read the first one. Here’s hoping the third book gets better. ( )

If Awakened, the first book in this series, was a competent curio co-written by one of the stars of Impractical Jokers, then The Brink, its successor, unfortunately removes the competence. The genuine bottle tension of the first book is replaced by a juvenile, country-hopping conspiracy plot about stopping an evil super-villain from destroying the world with a cache of nuclear bombs. The body horror has been replaced with purposeless, tasteless gore, and I still don't know much about the makeup or dynamics of the creatures. When their telekinetic powers are used towards the end, I'd forgotten they even had them in the first place. Speaking of which, all of the above allows us to experience dorky lines like the following in abundance:

"'They're using their telekinetic powers!' Cafferty shouted, rapidly pulling out his laser. 'Fire!'" (pg. 84)

[whilst out for a jog:] "These moments alone allowed him time to think about the next steps in taking down Albert Van Ness and the Foundation, to formulate decisive plans that would finally end the German's global reign of tyranny." (pg. 23)

"He held his laser by his side, prepared to fire at human or creature. It wasn't easy to accept he might have only seconds left as a living, breathing person, but that's exactly what he faced." (pg. 173)

The storytelling ability seems to have deserted Murray and Wearmouth, for whatever reason. Whether it was rushed to meet a deadline, or the decision to go the sub-par James Bond route was a mistake, or the concept is not strong enough to support the demands placed on it, the result is clear. The dialogue and characters both lack genuine vigour. There are no unpredictable twists in the plot. The book is, all round, just a clumsier read than its predecessor. ( )
