This book chronicles the fight for women's suffrage in England, but it looks to the U.S.'s same fight at various points to compare and contrast.

This book is informative, interesting, and easy to read. I'd say it would be useful for middle grade onward. Because so many acts of violence and torture are detailed, I'd wait to read it to a younger group.

Some facts I found interesting:

1) the sheer number of people who worked for suffrage

2) the number of years it took to get the vote

3) the amount of tactics used (including lots of property destruction)

4) the violence and literal torture many suffragettes and their male supporters suffered.

Also interesting was how WWI paused the movement because every man and woman was involved in the war effort. Yet because women stepped up to do the "men's jobs" while they were on the front, the war proved a turning point in any case. Why keep the vote from women who worked just as well as men, rather proving they weren't so "weak" and "stupid" after all? I'm SO curious what would have happened if there hadn't been a war!

Something else I liked about this book was that it didn't ignore the racial and classist struggles within the movement. Many white women didn't want Black women to get the vote, and others thought poor women didn't deserve it either. This is all addressed in the book, as are contributions by Black and Indigenous women nonetheless.

I felt hopeful after reading this. Change is possible, even though it takes time. Attitudes can change. Persistence matters.

I'll definitely hang on to this for my kids when they're a bit older! ( )

Short chronological essays are interspersed with introductions and portraits of prominent players in the suffrage movement. Illustrations throughout provide the reader with depictions of events and the occasional humorous take on events.

Though it would be a tough one for an elementary school student to get through provides great relatable detail and is well researched! Could be a fun one to flip through and learn more about this important movement. I would consider buying as it would be a great resource for student research or teacher presentations.

Women’s suffrage is the right of women to vote. Beginning in the late 19th century, women sought to change the voting laws to allow them to vote. Women gained the right to vote in the United States after ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. In the United Kingdom, women had equal suffrage with men in 1928. Most Canadian women gained suffrage between 1917-1919, however it wasn’t until 1960 that aboriginal women gained the right to vote. Native American women and women of color were often denied the right to vote in the United States until passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Suffragette: The Battle for Equality was a great book detailing the struggles of the suffragettes and suffragists (not the same) in the US and UK was very interesting to read! The book focuses almost exclusively on UK with passing mentions about the US and other commonwealths of UK. It would have be nice to have more information about the US and also more accessibility of the text to a younger audience (glossary, text boxes with background for context, etc.) Overall, a great read! ( )
