While the story revolves around Marlena's coming-of-age as a living saint and her first love story, some aspects of the story are more compelling (to me): The book has a unique take on spirituality. A) The idea of a gift that feels more like a curse and B) Marlena's responsibilities to sick people in her past, present, or future because of her gift. Where does her gift come from and why? God? Secondly, the fact that a following has built up around her in the form of a church, but without a religion is a very interesting part of this story. People assume Marlena has a close relationship with God, but she is unsure of how she feels.
Verdict: Optional purchase. ( )
