It’s always hard to talk about 2nd and 3rd books because I don’t want to give away spoilers. Also, I wasn’t as engaged with this third novel as I was the other two. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood? I don’t know. I did like the message. There’s an existential element where the characters recognize they have no control over their stories. I always like stories where the characters realize they are characters in a story and at the whim of the storyteller where their stories can never change.
In this third novel, Sefia is working hard to make sure she protects Archer from his destiny. Unfortunately, everything they do makes their “prophecy” happen anyway--much like Greek myths where they take action to avoid the prophecy from a Seer only to walk right into the prediction. Each character is moving towards his/her inevitable ending of some kind. The entire novel is Sefia and Archer trying to not be part of a war especially because Sefia has lost everyone she has loved--she can’t lose Archer, too. Sefia is obsessed with protecting Archer and Archer is haunted by those he has killed. All characters come together as they spin closer and closer to war and the inevitable prophecy, after all “what is written always come to pass.” (
