Fiction. Literature. Historical Fiction. HTML:

The Lost Family is an extraordinary read, the kind of book that makes you sob and smile, the kind that gives you hope.... It is compassionate, masterful and disturbingly contemporary."â??Tatiana de Rosnay, bestselling author of Sarah's Key

The New York Times bestselling author of Those Who Save Us creates a vivid portrait of marriage, family, and the haunting grief of World War II in this emotionally charged, beautifully rendered story that spans a generation, from the 1960s to the 1980s.

In 1965 Manhattan, patrons flock to Masha's to savor its brisket bourguignon and impeccable service and to admire its dashing owner and head chef Peter Rashkin. With his movie-star good looks and tragic past, Peter, a survivor of Auschwitz, is the most eligible bachelor in town. But Peter does not care for the parade of eligible women who come to the restaurant hoping to catch his eye. He has resigned himself to a solitary life. Running Masha's consumes him, as does his terrible guilt over surviving the horrors of the Nazi death camp while his wife, Mashaâ??the restaurant's namesakeâ??and two young daughters perished.

Then exquisitely beautiful June Bouquet, an up-and-coming young model, appears at the restaurant, piercing Peter's guard. Though she is twenty years his junior, the two begin a passionate, whirlwind courtship. When June unexpectedly becomes pregnant, Peter proposes, believing that beginning a new family with the woman he loves will allow him to let go of the horror of the past. But over the next twenty years, the indelible sadness of those memories will overshadow Peter, June, and their daughter Elsbeth, transforming them in shocking, heartbreaking, and unexpected ways.

Jenna Blum artfully brings to the page a husband devastated by a grief he cannot name, a frustrated wife struggling to compete with a ghost she cannot banish, and a daughter sensitive to the pain of both her own family and another lost before she was born. Spanning three cinematic decades, The Lost Family is a charming, funny, and elegantly bittersweet study of the repercussions of loss and l… (altro)

Peter Rashkin, Auschwitz survivor gets a fresh start in New York with help from Sol, the stereotypically wealthy, successful and irascible older cousin.

Bereft and lonely, having suffered severe trauma, Peter needs the demanding pace of managing and working creatively at Masha's Restaurant to distract him from painful and disturbing memories.

June, a stunning young model, provides further distraction for Peter.

Their marriage is not what either of them expected. June is a loving wife; and tries her best to be a homemaker and mother but she fills unfulfilled. Peter is a workaholic and doesn't spend nearly enough time at home with June, and their daughter Elspeth. You would think Peter would know this is a recipe for disaster but experiencing ongoing unatriculated agony he cannot think clearly. June tries to help him but is hurt when he will not share his feelings with her.

It is only at the end when Elspeth asks her father to tell her of his early life, that he finally opens up about the burden he has carried with him for most of his life.

Wars leave behind 'generational' devastation for the wives, husbands and orphans left behind.

Novel is engaging, sad, and very slow-paced.

Wow, so much great about this book. Loved the character development. I felt a part of everything going on and could not put it down. A great book for those that like family relationship women's fiction. Definitely add this one to your to be read list. ( )

I don't know where I expected this book to end up, but it wasn't what I imagined. That being said, it wasn't a bad thing, this book took me along for a ride that was different and unique. The characters are all horribly flawed, while still being likable and sympathetic. The book opens with Peter Rashkin, a Manhattan restaurant owner who is grateful for escaping the Nazis, but also feels safest hiding in a kitchen. He lost his wife and twin daughters in a camp and to honor them he names his flourishing restaurant after his wife. For two decades he's devoted every minute of his day to the success of his restaurant, he has no time for relationships or fun. That is until he meets a charming model named June Bouquet. She's easily two years his junior and they share next to nothing in common (except for their good looks) but they strike up a romance that turns out to be what neither of them expected. June always feels she is in the shadow of Peter's dead wife, and Peter just wants the simplicity of the kitchen with an occasional spice from June. As their story progresses it expands, shrinks, aches, and longs to be fulfilled. The Lost Family is the story of a non-traditional romance with heavy baggage and the tolls it takes on those involved. I liked how the story progressed across decades, the characters were also rich and complex and it felt so real. A fulfilling tale of loves progression and recession. ( )
