I like this book because I feel like the illustrations are almost as powerful as the words in the book. This book is a great example of a diverse picture book because each chapter uses color tones to represent the woman's culture, and because this book explores 13 different stories of 13 different women, it reflects the cultural diversity of the greater world. Just a few of the different women and their impact in the world that are discussed in this book include; Sor Juana Ines De La Cruz and her story behind having the first published argument for woman's right to education in the Americas, Kate Shepphard and her story with being the reason that New Zealand became the first country to grant all women the right to vote, Mary Verghese and her story on founding the first functional rehabilitation center in India, and Wangari Maathai's story on being the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree and become a professor at the University of Nairobi, as well as being the first African American woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I like this book. I know some don't, but I don’t understand why. It is a primer on women around the world who have done amazing things, and helped make our world a better place. Some are artists, athletes, teachers, doctors etc. All had to overcome someone saying no. They persisted. And while some names like Malala, Rowling, and Curie, there are women who have not appeared in other books for children. Women, who even this adult reader has not heard of, but just like the kids, I want to know more about these women and the things they did for themselves and those around them. ( )
