Die "Hochzeit des Dichters" schildert den Alltag eines gelassenen Volkes, das sich am Rande des Weltgeschehens behauptet hat und vom Lauf der Zeit vergessen wurde. Das ist es, was Skármeta überzeugend beherrscht: liebevoll Geschichten erzählen, Bilder malen von Menschen, die außerhalb von jedem zeitlichen Zwang leben. Sensibel blickt er in die Seelen seiner Charaktere, schafft sie mit so viel Fingerspitzengefühl, dass sie sogar vor der eigentlichen Handlung dominieren. Darüber schwenkt sein Augenmerk jedoch immer wieder zu Wein, Weib und Gesang: den derben Vergnügungen des Insellebens. Die barsche Sprache, in der Skármeta solche Ausschweifungen vornimmt, passt durchaus nicht immer zu dessen poetischem Blick. Dieses Rauhe, Obszöne, wirkt selten authentisch und fügt sich nur mit Mühe in den Gesamtstil des Romans.
