"DI Ben Kitto needs a second chance. After ten years working for the murder squad in London, his work partner's suicide has left him grief-stricken and responsible for her wayward dog, Shadow. He's tried to resign from his job, but his boss has persuaded him to take three months to reconsider. Ben plans to work in his uncle Ray's boatyard, on the tiny Scilly island of Bryher where he was born, hoping to mend his shattered nerves. His plans go awry when the body of sixteen year old Laura Trescothick is found on the beach at Hell Bay. Her attacker must still be on the island because no ferries have sailed during a two-day storm. Ben agrees to run the investigation and uncovers several suspects. He must now race against time to stop another teenager being killed." -- Provided by publisher.… (altro)

This is the first in a series of modern day crime novels set in the beautiful Scilly Isles off the coast of Cornwall, one of my favourite holiday destinations, indeed where I am currently on holiday at the time of finishing this book and writing this review. I have some mixed feelings about this. The Scilly setting was well described and redolent of the colour of life on these islands, but also contained some glaring errors, e.g. mentioning landing on the (non-existent) landing quay on the uninhabited island of Samson, and a reference to the first daily crossing on the Scillonian ship to Penzance being at noon (the one and only trip of the day leaves St Mary's at 4.30pm). I also found the basic plot of the novel unrealistic in terms of whether this sequence of events could really take place in such a small community as Bryher and was unimpressed with the final unveiling of the killer. I will keep reading the series though purely because of the Scilly setting and I feel some personal sympathy with the central character. ( )

This was a little slow to get going, but moved quickly after that. I liked Ben and his side kick Eddie, and the pool of suspects was conveniently narrow. Ben had enough of a back story to be interesting without being hideously traumatized. The Scilly Isles setting was interesting, although it made me less keen to visit. ( )

I liked this book I thought it was the 2nd novel in the series (Maybe she will write a prequel)
The story is DI Ben Kitto from the Metropolitan police decides to go on sick leave after an incident with his colleague.
Ben goes home to Bryher in the Scilly isles where he is soon investigating the disappearance of a young girl it then turns out to be a murder investigation. Everyone is a suspect out of the 80 odd inhabitants. There are a few odd ball characters and red herrings along the way. We discover why Ben is on sick leave his colleague Claire had killed herself.
Another teenager is found murdered he was one of the chief suspects.
Slowly but surely Ben Kitto solves the 2 murders along with his trusty sidekick Shadow the dog.

I will look out for more in the series, well written and researched book. ( )
