Recommendation: Anyone over thirteen. Due to stealing and there is more flirting than I would like, but otherwise it’s a pretty good book.

My Favorite Character/s: Willa Forsythe is different then most heroines seeing as she’s a thief. She is very protective of her “family” and is strong, but has a hard time trusting other people. She never met her father and her mother abandoned her when she was little, at first Lukas is just another person she needs to get something from for a job.

Lukas De Wilde is a flirt and I didn’t like him at first, but he got better the further I got into the book. In all I liked him. He wanted to find his mother and sister. He falls in love with Willa then he feels betrayed when he finds out who she really is. I liked his determination to find his mother and sister.

Margot De Wilde is a genius with mathematics. She hid with her Mother after Belgium was invaded by Germany while waiting for her brother to rescue them. I liked her and would like to see her in more books.

I loved Barclay too he's a great big brother to Willa and the others.

I love pretty much all of Roseanna White’s writing, and A Song Unheard is a favorite.

I haven't worked out why the cover sets off my “unconvincing violinist” radar. But I’m glad I didn’t let that put me off. This is my favourite of the trilogy.

In September of 1914 Willa, is sent to Wales to steal a cipher from the Belgium violinist, Lukas de Wilde. Lukas was forced to abandon his search for his family in German-occupied Belgium after he was shot, and is desperate with worry. Meanwhile his fourteen-year-old Margot and their mother are hiding under an assumed-name in Brussels.

Because I read The Number of Love first (unaware of its connection to this book), I knew where Willa, Lucas and Margot would all be in three years time-- but I still really enjoyed this.

Oh, I rolled my eyes at a few things, like Willa being such a brilliant violinist even though she’s never had any lessons ever, or Lucas supposedly having been a player -- without more details about his past behaviour, I wasn’t as convinced by references to his current behaviour being out-of-character as I suspect I was meant to be.

But once I decided to just accept that Willa is a musical genius, I loved all the scenes about playing the violin and the way the story captures Willa’s and Lukas’ passion for music. I enjoyed their banter and flirting. And I liked getting to meet a slightly-younger Margot and to fill in some of the pieces in her story.

“How do you say ‘idiot’ in French?”
He grinned. “Mon amour. Try it out.”
She rolled her eyes instead -- apparently even she knew that it meant ‘my love’.

“What was he working on? Your father, I mean.”
He flicked a gaze down at her, one that shone with intelligence that he quickly covered with a charming grin. “I could not tell you if I wanted to, mon amour. I am a musician, not a mathematician. And it was all mathematics.”
So then, he had some sense when it came to baring his soul to strangers. Good for him, if bad for her. She returned the grin. “Did you just call me an idiot? I ought to storm away.” ( )

I love this authors voice. Anything she writes, I want to read. I enjoyed Roseanna's first book in this series “A Name Unknown”. During this book we were introduced to the family of London's number one pickpockets and thieves. The second book “A Song Unheard” introduces us further to the second oldest sister, Willa Forsythe. Roseanna M. White is one of my top five authors. She is such a gifted storyteller. From the very first page until I set the book down I was wondering what would happen next. Even then I was left wanting more. This is a page-turner laced in romance. I love, love love this author as I said before. I would highly recommend this and any book that Roseanna M. White, might write. ( )

A thoroughly enjoyable book, A Song Unheard continues the Shadows over England series that follows a family of street urchins (think a nice version of Charles Dicken's Fagin gang) who steal to provide for themselves. They've gained such a reputation as clever thieves that they are recruited by a mysterious "Mr. V" who needs them to steal important documentation for him at the beginning of WWI.

The first book in the series followed Rosemary, an uneducated but passionate reader who poses as a librarian in the home of a potential traitor to the British crown. Her job--to find proof of his ties to Germany. But what she uncovers is a lot more surprising...

The second book follows her "sister" Willa, an untrained but gifted violinist who plays by ear. Her task is to steal a cypher from a famous violinist and the son of a brilliant cryptographer. He immediately falls head-over-heels for her, and proposes marriage, but Willa's only in it for the mark.

While it's hard to say that any romance is completely original or that "you didn't see it coming", this book just strikes me as very unique and well-crafted. Roseanna White's characters are all so brilliant; you feel like you are learning about cyphers, music, and lock-picking right along with them.

There is a lot of quick wit and unexpected plot twists that keep you on your toes, while still providing a happy ending and a satisfactory smile on the face of the reader. Highly recommended for people who like classics and historical fiction. It's a nice twist on both.

I would recommend both books in the series, although I would suggest starting with Book 1 if you plan to read it. Book 2 does give away the ending of Book 1, even though it follows a different main character. ( )

Recently, I've been trying to read and review books that might be of interest to a lady at my church. I've read The Crooked Path and The Captain's Daughter, both of which she loved. After finishing A Song Unheard, I have no doubt she'll enjoy this one as well. Roseanne White's novel takes place at the start of World War I. Willa Forsythe is the main heroine, who we find is both a prodigy with the violin and yet still a flawed character. I prefer not reading about perfect characters. They tend to be boring. In Willa's case, she’s hired as the best of the best when it comes to thievery. A cipher key is sought after by both England and Germany, with Willa stuck in the middle. She's tasked with finding out where it's locating and stealing it for the war effort. The owner of this key is rumored to be the renowned violinist, Lukas De Wilde. The problem is that eventually, a little romance begins to develop between Willa and Lukas, and she finds herself torn between this potential for a better future and her task.

This was a fast read and despite not being a fan of romance, I did enjoy the book. The characters were entertaining. The idea of the cipher was interesting. At times it was exciting with the dangers in Brussels following the German invasion. Willa is fully capable of handling her own in most situations. She has a strong personality and is very skilled. Not only that, but she has the uncanny ability to memorize music after one or two listens. So any reader hoping for a strong female character will enjoy reading this book. For those that like historical fiction, they'll enjoy reading A Song Unheard. I’m curious about the game they played in the book called ‘Go’. The only thing was the book left me wondering about Gottlieb's future. All in all, it's an excellent read, perfect for vacations or just relaxing at home. I know my friend will love it. And if you’re curious about the unheard song, the one that eventually Willa wrote, the author notes it can be heard in the book trailer.
