Pearl Buck is one of my favorite authors and the writing in this book is simply wonderful. She has a way of painting her characters innermost thoughts with such clarity and deep emotional wisdom. Unlike the other works I have read, this one was set in New England. The story was a bit sad: a struggle of a recent widow determined to live on her own terms, finding love, deciding how to approach those moments while staying true to her desire to love and be loved, yet doing the best for everyone. In other words, how to be a Goddess. It was difficult at times because I felt so sensitive to her feelings, but that is what a good writer needs to transmit to their readers. ( ) It is sweet to be loved, but to be able to love is to possess the life force. I love you. Therefore I am strong. Whatever my age, I am sustained by my own power to love. A novel whose age shows...telegrams, utter failure of the Bechdel Test...but whose meditations on Love in its many, mutable manners are in the veriest sense of the word timeless. An "older" (43!!) widow is torn between a young man's desire for her and an older man's long-standing regard for her, her perceived duty to her children and grandchildren, and her desire for selfhood at last. Assuming you're familiar with the entire genre of women's fiction, you'll know if this is agreeable to you; I found it a rich, enfolding hoary-old-story larded with The Best Aperçus! After her husband’s death, 42-year-old Edith Chardman develops relationships with two very different men, one older than her father and one young enough to be her son. In the process she discovers herself and the nature of love. Pearl Buck is fantastic when she’s writing about Eastern cultures, but she’s just ok when writing about Western cultures. There were several real gems scattered throughout the book, but for the most part, I didn’t really buy into a lot of her philosophies. This was predominately a character study of a character that I wasn’t that interested in. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

A widow's New England peace is interrupted by her feelings for two brilliant men, one much younger and the other quite older-and the dilemma of choosing between themAt forty-three, Edith has lost a husband, and has children who have children of their own. Living in a large Vermont house, her days are spent idly reading and playing music. But all of this is to change when two candidates for her affection arrive on the scene. The first is thirty years her senior, a philosopher named Edwin with whom she enjoys an enriching intellectual friendship. The second, Jared, is twenty years her junior: a Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
