Never Let Me Go meets The Island for YA--perfect for fans of Cat Patrick and Suzanne Young. Raised in an elite foster center off the California coast, sixteen-year-old Tabitha has been protected from the outside world. Her trainers at the center have told her she'll need to be in top physical condition to be matched with a loving family. So she swims laps and shaves seconds off her mile time, dreaming of the day when she'll meet her adoptive parents. But when Tabitha's told she's been paired, instead of being taken to her new home, she wakes up immobile on a hospital bed. Moments before she's sliced open, a group of renegade teenagers rescues her, and she learns the real reason she's been kept in shape: PharmPerfect, a local pharmaceutical giant, is using her foster program as a replacement factory for their pill-addicted clients' failing organs. Determined to save the rest of her friends at the center, Tabitha joins forces with her rescuers, led by moody and mysterious Gavin Stiles. As they race to uncover the rest of PharmPerfect's secrets, though, Tabitha finds herself with more questions than answers. Will trusting the enigmatic group of rebels lead her back to the slaughterhouse?… (altro)

Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this wonder novel by Jessica Kapp. What a fantastic story concept. I loved all the twists and turns and the little surprises in plot that kept coming. Tabitha has lived her life in virtual captivity... training like an Olympian in the hopes a foster family will select her if she only works hard and stays healthy enough. She has no idea why the fostering company really wants her and the other kids there.

I found the secondary characters and their stories especially fascinating, and would have loved to learn even more. The relationship that develops over the course of the book between Tabitha and Gavin is tender and sweet. But I think most fascinating to me is the role familial relationships play in this book, and Jessica Kapp does an interesting job of developing them. Very much enjoyed.

I didn't want to put this book down once I started it! Tabitha is shocked to find out that she wasn't going to be adopted by a foster family, but was going to have her body parts harvested. This is the story of how she is rescued from PharmPerfect's grasp and her quest to save her friends. A subplot is finding out about what actually happened to her parents. Likable characters and full of twists and turns! ( )

When Tabitha is finally selected by a family for adoption, she is shocked to be kidnapped by an odd assortment of characters. The group tells her that she was raised for her organs and that "adoption" meant she was condemned to die. Her thoughts immediately turn to the kids she left behind in the foster care center and a plan to rescue them quickly forms.

I think that young adults will enjoy this book. However, it felt like the premise was ripped off from The Island. There were so many contradictions and problems with the back story that the whole story came off as amateurish and poorly thought out. For example, if the kids were so worried that they had to hide in a bunker, why did they spend afternoons playing at a waterfall, visiting the town and eating ice-cream very publically. This book was just a mess. ( )

I really enjoy mysteries that are medicine related, especially ones that deal with possibilities that seem far-fetched but could really happen now or in the near future as medical technology advances. As a former pharmacist, I also hate Big Pharma and love books where they get what's coming to them. This is one of those books. It is not as medically technical as Robin Cook but it has enough technology to be believable. It is the story of Tabitha and her friends at the Center of Excellence on an island off the coast of California. They are all orphans who train endlessly in order to be in top physical condition to hopefully get the ultimate prize of a family. The Center and the island are owned and operated by PharmPerfect, the largest drug company in the world. They have the perfect pill for everything. What could possibly go wrong? Tabitha's day finally comes but instead of meeting her family she wakes up strapped to a table in a hospital. I am not going to ruin the story for the reader but it is full of action and a little romance with enough diabolical characters that you can't be sure who to trust. I would like to thank Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for a review. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more from this author.
