I loved the illustrations, and the story was great. I liked the explanation in the back about deaf people working as printers, and the author's admiration for his father who worked as a printer. Very cute. ( )

This book tells the story of a deaf man who instead of learning to write and read, learned to use his hands for sign language and typing. Although it may be unusual for a deaf man to work in a newspaper printing press, he took what God gave him and made it work. It is sad that even as adults his coworkers mistreated him because he was different. This story teaches a great lesson to students that just because two people have two different ways of doing something, it does not make one better than the other. It was such a turning point in the book when the press caught fir because it was him who alerted the people. I personally believe this might be a little over some younger students heads, I still think it is amazing book that sheds light on a common disability. ( )

I thin kit is really cool that this book features a deaf father who helps write a newspaper. It seems impossible to some that people who can't hear can do things like read and write. I think this book is really realistic of the feelings of some deaf people. The boy mentions that his dad felt mistreated by his coworkers. I love the way the author talks about how the dad helps during he fire saying that "his hands screamed", I love that since it is obvious that he couldn't speak. I love the symbolism of the paper hat first being made for the son, then for the dad and it being passed down. I think the short length and simple language makes this book suitable for younger audience. It can teach that even though someone can't hear they can still do things and help people. ( )

This book shows is a great story. It depicts a man that was deaf and worked at a newspaper press, where there were also other people who were deaf but not everyone. Those who could hear treated the man a little different mostly because they were unable to do sign language so they could not communicate with him. Little did they know that this man would go on to save their lives because he had spotted a fire that had started in the building. He was able to get the attention of many people warning them of a fire and they were able to spread the word to everyone and no one was harmed. ( )

This story shows a young boy's admiration for his father who is deaf. The father works as a printer. He is able to communicate with his other deaf colleges using sign language. However, most of the people he works with do not know sign language and ignore him. One day a fire breaks out in the pressroom and the father is able to warn everyone to get to safety. The boy praises his father throughout the story because even though he has a disability, he is still a hard worker. ( )
