2nd book in this series and I liked it even more than book 1.

This book follows the second member of the K9 team Hugh, and a young woman on the run from a criminal family Kaylee/Grace.

Kaylee gets a new identity from the same source that helped Jules in Book 1. Now named Grace, she moves in with Jules and her family - and almost immediately meets Hugh. And the sparks fly!

Nice romance, some suspense and danger, very minor mystery. Overall a light and fun read. ( )

On the Chase combines 2 things I love: dogs and damsels in distress! Grace witnessed something she shouldn't have and is now on the run with a new identity. She gets a job working at the kennel where she meets Hugh, a local cop and his K9 Lexi. She is obviously skittish, but Hugh is pretty determined. And then they get shot at...

Hugh is immediately suspicious of Grace because he knows she is lying. Once bullets start flying though, Grace comes clean about why she is in Monroe, Colorado for fear that she has been discovered. But, there is a LOT more than bullets trying to take her out. Hugh, Theo, and Otto quickly realize that its not Grace being targeted at all, but Hugh. I liked Hugh as a hero. He has a bit of that boyish charm mixed with the badass cop vibe. It totally worked. Grace mourned her old life, and while she was a bit vapid before, I understand her struggle to adapt to her new reality. To go from having a great job, a Masters degree, and a beautiful condo to having a GED, a job mucking kennel stalls, and living with 6 other people allows a person a bit of despair about their situation. So, I didn't find Grace annoying because frankly I would have felt the same sense of overwhelming frustration.

I loved seeing the brotherhood between Theo, Otto, and Hugh and their K9 companions. They are a great team and have an odd twist of a bromance. They kind of mother hen each other and its a little adorable. While I enjoyed book 1, I liked On the Chase much more! There was a lot of action and danger which kept me flipping pages, and Grace and Hugh were adorable!

  • POV: 3rd

  • Tears: no

  • Trope: damsel in distress, police, secret identity

  • Triggers: spoiler

  • Series/Standalone: stand alone within an interconnected series

  • Cliffhanger: no

  • HEA: yes

...then you will probably like On the Chase!

Kaylee has moved to same small town in the Rockies that Jules in Book 1 Run To Ground moved to. She changes her name to Grace and begins her life over. She is nervous that Jules has cops as friends and one of those cops is Hugh who is determined to find out her secrets. Hugh is very entertaining. He is on medical leave due to an injury but finds plenty of time to get himself and Grace in sticky situations. I seem to be in the minority as I read books just to enjoy the story as opposed to those that read them then tell us what they would have done in each situation. Are there things in this story that I would have done different than it was written, probably, but it didn't change how much I loved this story. ( )

I liked this book. It wasn't perfect but it was definitely entertaining. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Run to Ground, when I read it a few months ago so I was pretty excited to read Hugh's story. It was a pretty fast read for me since I had a rather hard time actually setting the book aside.

The book opens with Kaylee in her old life. She witnesses a horrifying crime and becomes a target herself. In order to stay safe, she changes her identity and starts all over. Kaylee, or Grace as she is now called, moves in with Jules and her four siblings. I was really happy to see all of the wonderful characters from the first book of the series having such an important role in this book. Grace is slow to adjust to her new life because she is living in constant fear.

Hugh is on leave as he recovers from a bullet wound and he is driving everyone crazy. He keeps showing up and getting involved in things when he is supposed to be resting. He thinks that Grace is being completely honest from the first moment he meets her. He becomes determined to find out what her real story is.

So like I said earlier this book wasn't perfect. Hugh crossed a few lines that kind of bothered me. It was like the man had no boundaries. A locked door....no problem, because he would find a way to get in anyway. This kind of behavior seemed to happen quite a bit at the beginning of the book but did lessen as the story progressed. I think that Grace let him off a little too easy a couple of times in the book.

I did like Grace and Hugh together. Grace is honest with Hugh about her past as soon as it becomes a safety issue and then they really do start to become a team. There were some pretty exciting scenes in the book that really had my pulse pounding. They did have great chemistry with each other and I really enjoyed their banter.

I would recommend this book to others. I enjoyed this action packed romance with wonderful chemistry between the characters. I am looking forward to reading more in the great series from Katie Ruggle very soon.

I received an advance reader edition of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley. ( )

Theo tied off the top of a full garbage bag and then lifted it out of the container without any visible effort. Although the play of his muscles didn’t fascinate Grace as much as if Hugh had been the one flexing, she couldn’t help but watch. A balled-up paper towel hit her on the side of the head, bouncing off harmlessly.
Grace turned narrowed eyes on Hugh. “That better have been clean.”
“It was. Mostly. Now stop drooling over Theo and pay attention to me."
She grinned at him and he quieted abruptly.
“So..." His eyebrows wagged teasingly, "Wanna make out?”
Staring into her coffee cup, Grace wondered how this had happened. How had she gone from her wonderful, sparkling life to where she was now, sitting in a VFW-turned-diner in the shrinking town of Monroe, Colorado, and dreading her upcoming shift at a dog kennel?
“What’s wrong?”
No. Please, no. Grace pushed her coffee out of the way so her forehead could hit the counter with a thump. Why do you hate me, God?
“Are you sad because Oliver’s evil twin cheated on Constance with Tatiana?”
“Stop!” Sitting up abruptly, Grace covered her ears and glared at Hugh. He looked all amused and hot and cheerful sitting there on the stool next to hers—right next to hers—and that made her even crankier.
You like it?” Posing with her free hand on her hip, she gave him her best sultry-model face. If she had to be stuck wearing wet coveralls and too-large rubber boots, then she was going to own the look.
He chuckled, although his gaze heated as he took her in. “Oh yeah. It’s kennel chic.”
“Right.” Dropping the pose, she frowned at him, trying to figure out why he was looking at her like he wanted to eat her.
