While it doesn't spend a lot of time doing a step-by-step look at the Ice Age Trail, it is still a very good book about a topic which hasn't had much written about it. McManus does spend too much time describing her injuries and complaining about how it's going to affect her goal of setting a speed record for through-hiking the trail, but that also makes the book more entertaining. I enjoy how she talks about the history of this trail in particular and other National Scenic Trails. I could have read less backstory of everyone who has ever hiked the trail and more about her personal experience, but those criticisms are not enough to affect what was an enjoyable read. ( ) This account of the author's endeavor to break a record the Ice Age Trail is in itself fascinating, but also seamlessly bolstered by incorporating other hiking accounts and trail history into the narrative. The books flows well from personal account, other accounts, geology, and history, without getting bogged down in too many details, keeping the pace light and the pages turning. There is some woo sprinkled in there, but not enough to distract from the primary drive of the story. I would recommend this book as an introductory primer on hiking the Ice Age Trail, or even different approaches to hiking in general, as it provides a solid overview ensconced within an entertaining narrative. Have you read the book, or seen the movie, "Wild"? Did you know there are other National Scenic Trails besides the Pacific Coast Trail and the Appalachian Trail? And one of them is right here in my state of Wisconsin? Then you might like this book! Melanie sets out to set a record for FKT (fastest known time) for a woman hiking the trail, even though she is "no spring chicken." She weaves her story of her journey with information about the history of the Trail, and other National Trails, others who have hiked the trails, her own history, and Wisconsin geography and natural history. It's a very enjoyable and informative read. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

"In Thousand-Miler : Adventures Hiking the Ice Age Trail, readers will learn about the history and development of Wisconsin's Ice Age National Scenic Trail and the geologic wonders it showcases, as they trace Melanie McManus's footsteps thru-hiking it twice. While sharing her story of what it was like to hike 1,100 miles of Wisconsin forestland, prairie, wetlands and farmland, McManus also shares the stories of thru-hikers she encounters along the way. Their collective tales shed light on the motivations of thru-hikers, how they accomplish the feat (everyone does it differently), and what the various trail segments and trailside communities are like. They will also recall the various funny, somber, and heartwarming moments that occur when hikers' paths intersect with those of ordinary Wisconsinites going about their daily lives"--Provided by publisher.
