I would only recommend Carl Makes a Scrapbook to those of you who are serious Carl "completists" and want to, or need to read every book in the series. Although some of the photographs (which seem to have been selected from pictures sent in by fans of the Carl series) are cute, the general make-up of the book is both confusing and very cluttered. It does not make for a flowing story, and many of the captions below the pictures are so small and hard to read that this book is more a chore than a pleasure. And while it does contain a few cute illustrations of Carl, this does not rescue this book from being, for the most part, confusing and rather tedious. Also, if this book was confusing and boring for me, an adult reader, it would probably be even less of a reading pleasure for a child. There are many books in the Carl series that are wonderful and an absolute pleasure to read and share with a child or even an adult dog enthusiast; I would strongly suggest reading these instead. Carl and his owner are supposed to be watching a movie on the alphabet, instead they decided they wanted to work on a scrapbook. Carl puts everything in the scrapbook, pictures of family, milestones, pictures of friends and heros. ( )

Mother goes outside to garden, leaving her daughter and Carl, the dog, to watch an educational video. Instead, the pair get down the family scrapbook and add their own touches to it. With only a few words at the beginning and the end, plus the captions on the family photos, the story is carried by the pictures, and they are charming! Any adult who is into making her own memory books will love sharing this with any small child who happens to be around. ( )
