This is a really cute book through the eyes of the little girls dog and the friendship that they carry together. The series has different levels so students can continuously read it and follow the dog and girls story of them solving mysteries together. I would use in the classroom because it's an easy read and the chapters are short but a great start to get the students to read more and at a higher level. ( )

This book is about King the dog and his owner Kayla, who was left a secret letter at her door. King tries to help Kayla crack the code to solve the letter. I would recommend this book for ages 5-9 or any child who is beginning to read chapter books. This book's purpose in my classroom would be for students who are just beginning to read novels.

This is a perfect book for a late stage primary reader. The words are large, simple, and easy to read and there are fun pictures to go along with them. The book has short chapters that are good breaking points for beginner readers as well as fun story lines to keep engaged. It has a positive representation of races and also can be a good mirror for students with a dog. ( )

I loved the relationship with Kayla and her dog I think so many kids who have animals can relate to this. I can as well because having an animal. It is important for kids to find books they can relate to and this is one for those who have animals. I loved how they worked together and the love they had for each other. I think this is a great book that will interest young readers. ( )

King, a dog, narrates this story in which his girl and her neighbor each receive mysterious notes written in what appears to be gibberish. Will they ever learned who sent the letters and what they mean?

This is a simple mystery for beginning readers. I like the way the girl Kayla and her neighbor Mason break down the problem into what they already know and the remaining questions to tackle. Of course, King's superior sense of smell helps him realize the sender right away, but he cannot communicate this to the humans. However, all's well that ends well, as King directs to the children to the sender and they are able to crack the code to learn the message hidden in the letters. King's enthusiasm for life is catching, and children will enjoy the book being narrated by a dog, with all the attendant humor that involves. The illustrations help to illuminate the text and also indicate a diverse cast of characters.

Overall, this is a great read for young readers. It serves to bridge the gap between shorter early readers and much longer chapter books. The chapters here are relatively short and each page has a limited number of sentences. The book is under 50 pages in total, with some pages being mostly or fully illustrations. That is a manageable amount for young readers, who will feel accomplished when done that they finished a chapter book of their own. They, like myself, will probably be interested in seeking out more of King and Kayla’s adventures together. ( )
