Treachery, adventure and the dream of freedom triumph in this stunningly evocative historical adventure, inspired by a stunning real-life story, and brought to a modern teen audience by a Carnegie Medal winning author. It's 1848 in the Deep South of America. Fair-skinned Rosa is a slave but can 'pass for white'. With the help of Moses, her husband, she disguises herself as a young white man - and Moses's master. In this guise, the two of them must make their way out of the South, explaining away their lack of literacy, avoiding those they have encountered before and holding their nerve over a thousand miles to freedom. Inspired by the amazing true story of Ellen Craft who escaped a life of slavery through a daring disguise and won freedom for herself and her husband.… (altro)

Liked this a lot but it is based on a true story which would probably be even better. Rosa is a slave in the USA late 1840s but as the child of a slave and a white master, she has very pale skin and straight dark hair. When she meets Benjamin for the first time, he thinks she is white but when she sets him staright, they fall in love and eventually marry. In those times however, Rosa has to live with the family that "own" her, and here the master of the house rapes her at night despite her being a married woman.
When Rosa discovers she is pregnant, she does not know who is the father, Benjamin or her master, and so she devises a plan to escape to the North and eventually Canada by posing as a white master and taking Benjamin along as her "slave".
The whole story is based on the true story of William and Ellen Craft who did just that and escaped eventually to England.
There is the "N" word in this book but it is in context with the story and times. ( )
