This is a much needed story that shows why some kids are forced into the lives they live. It's sad but encouraging. This novel gives a voice to those kids who get a bad rap. It's a quick read and sheds light on the societal issues that plague so many young adults on their journeys. I only with there was more to know in the end. To know how things work out would be nice, but at the same time it's comforting to end on a high note, to have your own hopes for the dynamic characters. ( )

Matt is just trying to get through high school, and keep his "uncle" pain free while he is dying from cancer. They have no insurance, so Matt gets Jack's morphine by dealing other things at school. The vice-principal wants nothing more than to get Matt kicked out of school/arrested and out of his hair. But Matt is pretty smart, and has managed to not get caught, yet. When the school board decides that all students must have an extra-curricular to graduate, it looks like that might be the end for Matt. Helped by Amanda, who is an outcast herself, Matt just might make it through one of the toughest times in his life.

Oh Matt, you poor thing. I see bits of you in the hallways at my school, and my heart breaks.
I loved this short read, and think many of my kids will also.

// Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review //

it's sad because I was actually so excited to finally be able to read this book :((

"She didn't know it wasn't a choice. He was alone."

I just found this book so sad and depressing and I could not find it in myself to be able to connect with any of the characters. Though, I did start to feel some of the characters much more midway through the book. The story and the plot was really slow and I cannot find the point of everything that was going on. I was not a fan of the incorporation of drugs into the story. Not my cup of tea.

Amanda's character was perfect. . .maybe too perfect for a story like this. It's not a cliche story but, I guess what I expected was a very cheesy love story, based on the title and how the cover made me feel when I saw it.

In the end, I felt bad for both Matt and Amanda (not exactly sure why). It isn't because I hated this book but more for the fact that I really didn't feel anything that was going on in the book. I guess I am just more of a happy, light, deep person when it comes to books. I don't really like anything too depressing.

Matt Nolan is a drug-dealing high school student who has perfected the craft of making money in order to support himself and his terminally ill Uncle Jack. The school principal cannot wait to get Matt expelled and attempts to corner Matt by pointing out a lack of extra-curricular activity. When Uncle Jack's condition worsens, Matt finds help in an unlikely friend found in an after school club.

I appreciated how Matt grew as a character in this piece and the importance placed on relying on others in times of need. Drug dealings are not glorified, but are portrayed as a means to an end. Readers may identify with themes of loss, friendship, and familial relationships. ( )
