Aztán adott ugyanez a sci-fi író, aki furábbnál furább levelekkel zaklatja kedvenc szerzőit, a fantasztikus irodalom nagyjait. Szóval történet – ahogy a történetet érteni szokás – nincs. (Illetve dehogy nincs. ( ) Reminds me of chunks of Savage Detectives. A little scattered and inconsistent compared to his other, more focused works. Still, his narration is readable and intelligent. Any bibliophile can relate to his protagonist. For bolano fans this posthumous work may seem like the icing on a cake which already has plentiful icing. Bolaño had been an author on my radar for ages as someone I should read. There just hadn't been anything to make me pick up any one of his books in particular until I saw this on the new shelf at the library. Obviously I picked it up for the science fiction reference. This is a strange and wandering tale that takes place on three intersecting planes: 1) The tale of Jan and Remo, two young poets trying to find their way in Mexico City, 2) Jan's letters to established science fiction authors, sometimes advocating for support, grants, and organizations for Latin American science fiction, and sometimes deranged, and 3) Remo being interviewed after winning a literary prize, talking about and sometimes just reading from his winning book. Nothing wraps up or converges so much as it just disappears into the steam of a Mexico City bathhouse. I've read that this was among Bolaño's first works, unpublished during his life and not up to the standards of his later works -- so perhaps this isn't the best introduction to his work. But still, there was something about this -- the tenderness, the strangeness, the familiarity and the novel, that I closed the book feeling I'd glimpsed at least some part of Bolaño's greatness, more likely to pick up something else by him in the future. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
