Sie war einst ein Comic-Fan wie ihr. Bis Gwen Poole eines Morgens in einer Welt aufwachte, in der all ihre Lieblings-Comicfiguren offenbar real waren. Aber geht ja nicht. Muss alles Fake, ein Traum oder sonst was sein. Und seither benimmt sich Gwen, als wäre sie die ver&$Heldin eines Videospiels. Bühne frei für Marvels verantwortungslosestes Vorbild aller Zeiten: Gwenpool!

Det är inte alla som vågar låta en parodi på sin egen skapelse springa runt i den, men Marvel gör det. Inte enbart med Deadpool, utan nu också med Gwenpool (egentligen Gwen Poole; ursprungligen från en tankelek där Gwen Stacey skulle vara Deadpool), en serieälskande ung kvinna från vår värld som en dag finner sig i serievärlden och bestämmer sig för att bli legokrigare. Hon gillar vapen, rosa, pengar och att intala sig själv att hon är en hjälte(i början är hon ganska mordisk, sedan skruvas det ner något).

Hon har inga superkrafter, mer än encyklopedisk kunskap och en förlitan på serievärldens lagar (t.ex. om vad som händer om man hoppar ner från en hög höjd). Detta fungerar någorlunda, tills hon tvingas jobba för Modok (kanske den underligaste av Marvels konstiga storskurkar), tillsammans med en B-liste-skurk och ett par konstiga typer.

Det hela går fort (historierna publicerades först i sex tidningar, och Gwen träffar på lika många viktigare gestalter i Marvels universum), gör inga större anspråk på djup, och absolut inte på att hänga ihop särskilt väl. Gwen är där för att irritera andra och strunta i fjärde väggen, och hon gör det med viss stil, om än inte speciellt mycket erfarenhet (speciellt i de delar Gurihiru tecknat, där den den högre graden av stilisering jämför med Daniel Beyruths mer realistiska, som används i resten, ger större möjligheter för att flippa ut). Det är mycket fluffigt men underhållande. ( )

Genius plot. Makes me want to dig up old comics. Love the fact that out of all her dilemmas she decides that having no pants for her costume is the worst.

Anyway, wow, that was... really good. Like, surprisingly good! It was a lot of good fun, but still had just enough poignant moments to not be over the top, and it left so many questions to be answered! I really enjoyed this :D ( )

The Unbelievable Gwenpool Vol 1: Believe It by Chris Hastings is the first collected volume of Gwenpool comics. It collects issues #0–4 and is more or less an origin story for the character. I previously read and reviewed the Gwenpool holiday special, a small portion of which was reprinted in this collected edition.

Gwenpool is a great character. She started off as a bit of a joke — a Gwen Stacey version of Deadpool — but has grown into her own character. Although we don't get her full back story in this volume (there are hints that more information is coming) the basic idea is that Gwen is from our universe and has been transported into the comic book world. Her super power is knowing everyone's secrets because she read a lot of comic books back in our world. This also gives her a reason to break the fourth wall and allows her to make direct references to real-world pop culture that aren't possible in other comics.

Gwen is a rather devil-may-care character at first, but soon starts to realise that just because she's from the real world, doesn't mean everything is going to magically work out for her with no effort. Things get a bit dicey and Gwen realises she needs to actually try to survive the situation she's gotten herself into.

This is a hilarious comic and I recommend it to fans of humour and silliness. I think it will appeal to fans of Squirrel Girl and Spider-Gwen, although it is significantly more irreverent than both of those. I am looking forward to the next issue and I hope the writers keep up the current, fresh vibe (and that she manages to get some pants added to her costume, c'mon Ronnie).
