I was under a misapprehension when I bought this book at the library sale. it contains no music and no musicians, which disappointed me. What it does have is a lot of lists and a rather creepy stranger who wanders into a family home and never leaves again. ( )

The Liszts by Kyo Maclear, illustrated by Júlia Sardà, and published by Tundra Books is an off beat story about a family of list makers.
When I first picked up this one I thought it was kind of odd but I was fascinated. The illustrations are very Addams Family-esque. Everyone in the family Liszt makes lists, very obscure lists and lists most regular. One day an unexpected visitor turns up who is not on the list. Is there room for a little unexpectedness in the Liszts world?
When I first read through this book, I found it to be really unusual but upon subsequent readings it grew on me. It's a quirky little story about being spontaneous, and spontaneity is something that can be lacking for a lot of us in our over scheduled lives. I truly believe that the story/illustrator combo suits this story to a tea as I don't think the story would be quite as impactful without Júlia Sardà's whimsical and quirky illustrations. ( )
