A child-friendly story about the trials and triumphs of starting over in a new place while keeping family and traditions close. When Hee Jun's family moves from Korea to West Virginia he struggles to adjust to his new home. He can't understand anything the teacher says, and even the sky seems smaller and darker. Hee Jun begins to learn English words and make friends on the playground. One day at a classmate's house he sees a flower he knows from his garden in Korea: mugunghwa, or rose of Sharon. Hee Jun is happy to bring a shoot to his grandmother to plant a "piece of home" in their new garden.… (altro)

This book would be great for primary readers to listen to. This story is about a little boy named Hee Jun and his journey as he adjusts to his new school after immigrating to the United States from Korea. I loved this story and I think that it's a wonderful example for students to get get a better understanding of what it is like to immigrate from another country. This book would be very helpful at the beginning of the school year. ( )

This book is about a boy named Hee Jun who migrates from Korea to West Virginia. This is a difficult for him because he has a language barrier and he doesn't feel like he fits in. Weeks go by and he starts to slowly but surely speak english words he later gets a play date. During this playdate he discovers a flower that he had recently seen in Korea and takes it home. This was a small connection for him that reminded him of home. This book is great for ELL students and also an eye opener for American students on how hard coming to America can be and adjusting. I enjoyed this book. ( )

The perfect book for kindergarten to 3rd graders. This book shows readers about new students coming to their school and how it may take the student time to adjust. This character is coming from a whole other country and it is going to be hard to learn a new language and how things are done differently. We need to treat each other kindly and do what we can to help others feel comfortable no matter where they come from. This can be used in any classroom and especially if you are getting a new student so students can get a little perspective. ( )
