In my opinion, this is a fantastic book. The language in the book was repetitive and had patterns. For example, after each neighbor would have a good deed happen to them the author would have that character say, “Then he had a thought he’d never thought before. I bet I could help them.” This made the book clear and showed the reader the connections between each of the neighbors. The characters were well developed throughout the book, as the readers watched them all grow together. They started off not even talking to each other, however by the end of the book the neighborhood has come together to form their own community. The illustrations in my opinion played a huge role in this story, as they went along with the text appropriately and enhanced the story. On one of the first pages in the book, the little boy was picking the berries in a tree and sees his elderly neighbor, the picture shows exactly this. This book pushes readers to think about bigger issues, like overcoming cultural differences. Almost every character in this book was different from each other and had different issues they needed help to solve. I think the big idea of this book is to help out others. The book demonstrates how good things can happen when you take the time to help someone out when they are in need. ( )
