This book encourages discussion about famous art pieces. Each page has a different famous piece of landscape art accompanied with questions to facilitate discussion.

1. Summary - This book goes over 12 paintings and each pages goes over a few questions over the painting and what we could be looking for to give us an insight as to what the artist is trying to communicate to us. Another section that is gone over about each painting is a little background on the artist and some of how they came to a decision on what to paint/why, where they got started painting or realized they wanted to become an artist.

2. Personal Reaction - I thought this book was informative and presented these pieces of art in a neat way. I don't know that this book would be good for kids to read alone.

3. Extension Ideas -
1. I would use this book as an aid to me if I were going over some of these pieces in class. It could give me some background to share with the students and questions to discuss.
2. I could use this book as extended reading for some students but I honestly don't know of a circumstance that I would give this book to a student unless they picked it up, I wouldn't discourage any child from reading a book like this.

Part of the World of Art Come Look with Me series of explorative fine art books for young children, Exploring Landscape Art With Children is designed for children four to ten years. The book exposes children to the works of 12 artists including Vincent van Gogh, Henri Rousseau, M. C. Escher, and Georgia O’Keeffe. For each of the book’s 12 works of art children are encouraged to engage the landscape depicted by imagining themselves, for example, in the winter snow of Breugel’s Hunters in the Snow (1565) or the jungle stillness of Rousseau’s The Repast of the Lion (1907). Children also become acquainted with the artist’s technique (ex., brush stroke or use of perspective) and are asked to consider how the landscape would appear different if such techniques were altered or absent. Unlike Macaulay’s The Way Things Work (1988), writer and educator Blizzard reaches young minds without overpowering them with technical jargon.
