This book is so gleefully full of smugglers, runaway brides, murderers, secret cellars, sardonic spinsters, midnight assailants, dueling pistols, lords disguised as lady's maids, absurd coincidences, gentlemen boxers, priest holes, and incriminating rings that I don't have the heart to dislike it. I have to love it. ( ) The Talisman Ring is one of Heyer's funniest and fastest-paced romantic comedies, telling the story of a fugitive heir, a tempestuous Frenchwoman, and the two sensible people who try to keep them out of trouble. Neither Sir Tristram Shield nor Eustacie, his young French cousin, share the slightest inclination to marry one another. Yet it is Lord Lavenham's dying wish. For there is no one else to provide for the old man's granddaughter while Ludovic, his heir, remains a fugitive from justice. I almost didn't finish this book. To say I found Eustacie frivolous and vapid would be an understatement, but fellow BL's said it was an entertaining read so I stuck with it. They were right, but those first three chapters almost killed me. At the end of the book, I still think Eustacie is frivolous and vapid, but after chapter 4 I started to think of this book as the historical fiction version of a Carol Burnett Show skit, or one of the older British sketch comedies. That, and the increased focus on Miss Thane and her hilarious brother allowed me to thoroughly enjoy the rest of the book. I still like The Grand Sophy better though. [PopSugar 2015 Challenge: A Classic Romance] Drags a bit in the middle, but still fun. I had forgotten most of the details because it's been so long so it was almost like reading it for the first time. It also helps that it has a different sort of plot than her usual. I had piled my stack high with fun things at the beginning of the month out of habit---August was my "binge-fluff-before-school-starts" month. But, by the time I got to this book, cancer scares, world news, and stress-insomnia made it a bit too fluffy and I was eyeing Victor Hugo's Hunchback with some sort of longing. So I have changed over the years. I used to be able to escape it all and now it creeps over the pages... nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
