The fourth volume of Drawn & Quarterly Showcase is certainly the best of the five volumes published to date, almost solely on the strength of Dan Zettwoch's "Won't Be Licked", a wonderful memoir of the 1937 flood in Louisville, Kentucky. The book starts off in a less promising fashion, with a typically dull piece from Gabrielle Bell followed by a slightly more interesting contribution by Martin Cendreda recalling an idle, youthful summer in Los Angeles. But Zettwoch's story is the reason to read this book, since it represents comic art at its very best - Zettwoch can sure draw, but the clincher is his storytelling skills. Drawn from his grandfather's memories of the actual event, Zettwoch weaves a first-person narrative of a great natural disaster with warmth, pathos, and a strong sense of humor - a really excellent piece all around.
