Discusses the political processes, parties, and people of democracy, American style. Democracy - America has it and it seems like many other countries want it. But what exactly is a democracy and how easy is it to maintain? Despite the easy banter in today's media, many Americans are still in the dark when it comes to knowing and acting upon their rights and responsibilities as citizens of a democratic society. In refreshingly candid and straight-to-the-point language Elissa Grodin takes readers of all ages on an A-Z trip through our government's structure, from its earliest beginnings to definitions of basic components and concepts (including immigration and taxation). Engaging, disarming, and frequently thought-provoking artwork from illustrator Victor Juhasz emphasizes the magnitude of the subject. From founding fathers, first ladies, and the First Amendment to the presidential oath of office, D is for Democracy details the political processes, parties, and people of democracy, American-style.… (altro)

This goes through the alphabet to break down important aspects of American principles, understandings, and events to kids.

This book could be used to create a text innovation. Each student could write their own alphabet book while standing on the shoulders of Elissa Grodin. They could write about some topic in our U.S. history. Something that defines Americans. ( )

This is a great book for introducing some basic ideas and concepts related to American democracy. For each letter of the alphabet, a specific vocabulary word related to our democracy and beginning with the corresponding letter is introduced in a simple sentence (ie "E is for elections - We're guaranteed this right. If often gets exciting counting votes all night.") Each letter and concept also has a side bar that goes into much greater detail about each concept. This makes the book accessible to multiple age ranges depending on how you choose to introduce it. An election day must read!

This book was fun and a very easy book for the children to interact with. I used this book for a read aloud and it went really well. I would definitely reccommend reading this book to a class or at the very least having it on a book shelf for them to pick up.
